X-Men:Apocalypse

On Sunday afternoon my husband and I went to see “X-Men: Apocalypse .

Although I didn’t read the comics or watch the TV show back in the 90’s I have seen and for the most part enjoyed all of the X-Men movies over the last sixteen years. I especially loved “X-Men: Days of Future Past” in the summer of 2014 (be sure to check out my review of that film). So I was really looking forward to this one despite what seemed like so-so reviews.

There were several small continuity errors within the X-Men film universe but at a certain point you have to be willing to forgive those. There is obviously no way that the people at Marvel and 20th Century Fox would have known certain characters would have been introduced in this film back when they introduced them in “x2: X-Men United” in 2003 or “X-Men: The Last Stand” in 2006.

Despite those small error I really, really liked the film. I especially appreciated how the film was a true ensemble and didn’t spend too much time on any one character. I think that is something that both this film and “X-Men: First Class” did really well. I normally grow quite tired with action movies and haven’t ever fully jumped on the superhero train but there is something I find different about the X-Men movies. I suppose it all goes back to the comics but the X-Men Films seems to have sense of morality, social justice and history that other summer blockbusters just don’t have.

You don’t see a movie like “X-Men: Apocalypse” for the acting but the acting was as good as you’re going to get in a film like this. Two time Academy Award Nominee Michael Fassbender is able to bring such an amazing humanity to Magneto. His storyline made me cry.

James McAvoy has really grown into his role as Professor X. And Academy Award Winner Jennifer Lawrence is at her movie star best as Mystique. In addition to them I was quite happy with the rest of the cast. I especially love Evan Peters as Quicksilver.  As well as Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler. But the addition to the cast I was most excited about was Sophie Turner as Jean Grey. Not only do I love Sophie Turner from her work on “Game of Thrones” (check out my blog entry on the most recent episode of that Emmy Award Winning Show) but I also love Jean Grey. I thought Sophie did a great job at tapping into both Jean Grey’s vulnerability and power.

I highly recommend the movie for anybody who likes the X-Men movies but hasn’t seen it yet. I do think the film could have done without the cameo from Academy Award Nominee Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. I will see the last Wolverine movie when it comes out but what I am hoping for are more X-Men movies with this cast. It’s just a matter if Lawrence, Fasbender and McAvoy want to do more and if Marvel and 20th Century Fox and afford them.
