Dominique and Nick’s beautifully happy Pendrell Hall wedding, with Becky Harley Photography

Tags: wedding dress

Dominique and Nick’s Wedding is beautiful – gracefully styled with exquisite florals and elegant touches throughout. Their venue needs no introduction: Pendrell Hall is one of our faves here at English Wedding HQ. Dominique looks so lovely in her dress, although she admits to having her bridal ‘moment’ when she fell in love with her shoes! (which are gorgeous!!) The focus of this fab couple’s wedding is most certainly on family, and that’s what we love most of all. Involving your children in your wedding is so important, and will make the day so much more special and memorable… even if you do end up lying on the floor in your wedding dress having Thomas the Tank Engine driven across your hair (seriously, one of my fave pics! Don’t miss it at the end of this blog post!)

I met Becky at the NEC Wedding show and loved the work she had on display. I took her details and after a subsequent phone call with Becky I knew she would be perfect to have with us on our wedding day but I wanted Nick to feel like it was the right choice too and so we Skyped her together and both loved her approach and personality as well as her photographic style.

Becky was absolutely one of the best decisions we made for our wedding, and a pleasure to deal with in the run up to the wedding. We met her for an engagement shoot, which felt like meeting up with a friend. We were so delighted with the shots she took of us and our twin boys and couldn’t wait to see the images she would capture of our big day. On the wedding day itself, Becky went above and beyond what we imagined a wedding photographer would do. Whilst getting ready with my bridesmaids and mum, she was amazing. She helped to keep me focused with the timings of the morning’s preparations, was so warm and friendly and slotted into our bridal party as if a close friend was in the room with us and took some intimate photos whilst all the time being totally unobtrusive. She organised our guests really well for the posed group shots and made us feel at ease for the couple shots too. Becky was such a pleasure to have with us on the day.

Seeing our wedding photos for the first time was extremely emotional and bittersweet because my dad passed away suddenly just a couple of weeks after the wedding. But Becky had done such an amazing job of capturing some truly precious moments as well as portraying the happiness that exuded on our wedding day. We will forever treasure the images and the memories that the photos evoke.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

We weren’t very good at saving money on wedding items! I did manage to get my bridesmaids beautiful dresses in the sales however and my bridal gown was reduced slightly as I bought it at the Wedding Show.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

Our photographer and videographer. These are our lasting visual moments from the day and are well worth the investment.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

I decided to make our own stationary. I really wanted to add some of my own creativity to the day however, it was extremely time consuming. I’m glad i did it but I should’ve started the design and printing process much earlier.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

No! I had a love/hate relationship with my dress! I’d tried on over 50 dresses by the time I chose my gown and felt like i’d settled for a dress because although it had elements that I liked the most, it still wasn’t really what I was looking for. So I spent the 9 months prior to the wedding not really liking my dress. I certainly didn’t ever have the ‘moment’ that people talk about when choosing my dress. However, on the wedding day itself I felt lovely and it was right for that day, despite being a bit too long and almost tripping up walking down the aisle.

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

I did have the bridal moment with my shoes! I fell in love with them when I saw them in a bridal magazine and then when I went into the store to try them on I was even more in love with them. I chose Rachel Simpson Mimosa in Ivory. They were beautiful and as comfortable as slippers from the moment I tried them on. When in the Rachel Simpson outlet shop I noticed some gorgeous jewellery on display by Laurel Lime. I ordered some really beautiful handmade hair combs, which were made bespoke with a darker silver wire to compliment the more vintage style of my champagne lace dress. Nick surprised me with some diamond stud earrings on the morning of our wedding which I wore.

And what did the groom wear?

Nick wore a navy Reiss suit with a contrasting tweed waistcoat. He chose brown leather brogues from Dune.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

The bridesmaids dresses were from Adrianna Papell and were the most gorgeous blush colour. The one shoulder, chiffon maxi dress style suited all of my bridesmaids shapes. I thought they all looked stunning.
I wanted all the girls to be really comfortable so I asked them to choose their own shoes. They all had different styles from Dune and Carvela to suit themselves, although all were in a similar nude/blush colour..
My youngest bridemaid wore a cream, lace and chiffon dress from Monsoon with cream ballet shoes.
I picked up some lovely sparkly hair combs to prettily adorn their hairstyles, from Accesorize.
My clever sister Lisa made their simple but classic pearl bracelets.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

I had a make up trial with an MUA but really didn’t feel that I looked like myself so I invested in some Urban Decay, Dior and Clarins makeup and practiced in the run up to the big day so that I could do it myself.
My bridesmaids and I had our hair styled at Sassy’s Hair salon in Codsall Wood.

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

Big Little Things arranged our flowers. I chose blush roses to pick out the bridesmaids colours, cream spray roses, beautiful wax flowers (which were my favourite element of the floristry), Love in the Mist and eucalyptus leaves. I asked for hydrangeas to be included in the table centrepieces. The button holes were spray cream roses, wax flowers and rosemary.

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

Pendrell Hall has the most exquisite original wood carvings and plaster decorations and as such we didn’t want to distract from the beauty of the venue by over dressing it, so we opted for flowers and photos. We hung old photos of us and our guests, along with a couple of large photos from our engagement shoot. We chose some large letter lights in our initials to create an ambient backdrop to our evening entertainment. We also displayed some cute smaller letters with our twin boy’s initials.

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

It was nice to be able to print signs, menus, placenames and labels in the same style as our wedding invitations. I made labels for our sweet table, wedding favours and the welcome sign. I should have started these all earlier though as I ran out of time. We made wedding recovery packs for our favours, which were fun.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

Nick didn’t fancy anything too frilly or floral so we agreed on a 4 tier blush cake with a cream ribbed bottom tier, cream lace and a cream piped brushed floral design. We chose a simple ‘Mr and Mrs’ topper.
The super talented Laura Jane cake design made this for us. We chose 3 different flavour sponge cakes of lemon, Nutella and vanilla strawberry.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

As the guests arrived they listened to an instrumental version of ‘Dangerzone’ as a nod to mine and Nick’s love of the film Topgun!
We hired Liam Price to sing and DJ for us as we partied into the night.

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Start preparations earlier than you might think you need to! Don’t settle for a wedding dress, it’ll cause months of anxiety! Most of all, just enjoy the engagement and wedding planning time and try to absorb every moment of the big day. Oh, and hire a brilliant photographer and videographer so that when its all done and dusted you have some amazing images and footage to help you relive the day for the rest of your lives.

What’s the best thing about being married?

Officially spending the rest of my life with my best friend.
