How To Get The Blurred Lip Trend / Popsicle Lips

I have been seeing blurred lips all over the red carpet and runways lately and I am loving it. The idea is that there are no sharp or opaque lines or colors to the Lip and it looks completely blended and natural looking. This is also known as the “popsicle lip,” named after the stain your lips have after eating a red popsicle or lollipop. This lip trend looks great on everyone, regardless of age or skin color, and it takes just a couple of minutes to achieve. I personally think this is also the perfect Valentine’s Day lip for the big date night or even if you’re just having a Galentine’s Day!

I’m going to show you the exact products I used to get this look, but keep in mind that you can use any lip liner brands or shades you have. I’ve seen this done with various shades of red, pink, orange, and brown as well. I personally like a very traditional nude and pink combination because it looks ethereal and soft. I used three products:

  1. MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime Lip. This is an important step because you want your lips to be as smooth and moisturized as possible. Make sure you’ve exfoliated any dead skin. This is a clear base that adds just a touch of moisture to your lips and helps anything else you put on top of it to apply and stay on better.
  2. MAC Cosmetics Liptensity Lip Pencil in “Honey Pecan.” This is a beautiful warm nude lip pencil that blends like a dream. Once you’ve prepped your lips, outline them with this lip pencil. Fill in the corners of your mouth, both upper and lower, and using feathery strokes, come in almost to the center of your lips.
  3. MAC Cosmetics Liptensity Lip Pencil in “Cut Ruby.”  This is a hot pink shade that, by itself, is quite intense. Using it after already using Prep + Prime Lips (or your lip balm of choice) and applying it to the center of your lips only, you can then use light, feathery strokes to work the product from the center of the lips to the outer corners. Be sure not to go all the way to the outer corners. If you want to blend everything really easily, go ahead and blot your lips together. I personally end up blotting my lips 3-4 times throughout this process, making sure the pink and the nude shade have properly blended and it looks natural.

I am noticing a lot of companies are making products now that are advertised as a “blotted lip” or a lipstick with a “plush finish.” The truth is, you can do-it-yourself at home with just a few simple products and some tips and tricks from this post.
