How to store walnuts

Whole nuts can be stored at room temperature for several weeks. Shelled nuts must be refrigerated immediately. Even better: Freeze them in a tightly sealed bag and they’ll last for up to a year.

How to store almonds

Almonds can last a very long time if they’re stored properly. If they’re raw and they’re packed, keep the almonds unopened in a cool, dark place for up to two years. Unopened roasted almonds can be stored under the same conditions for up to one year. Both will last even longer if you refrigerate them or place them in the freezer. Don’t store almonds in a warm pantry, because they’ll turn rancid much quicker.

Once a pack of almonds is opened, place them into an airtight container or resealable plastic bag with the air squeezed out. Then, store them in a cool, dry, and dark place. Use them within three months.

How to store raisins

- Depending on the variety of grape, raisins (dried grapes) become dark brown or golden.

- Look for tightly-sealed containers or covered bulk bins. Raisins should feel soft and pliable.

- Store raisins in an airtight container in a cool, dry, dark place.

- Once opened, reseal the package tightly to help prevent hardening. For best quality use within 6 months.

- If raisins become hard, soak in hot liquid for 5 to 15 minutes. Drain and use.

- It takes 1 cup of grapes to make ¼ cup of raisins. They both have about 100 calories.

How To Store Lemons

Whole lemons: Whole lemons are best kept in the fridge. However, you can also freeze whole lemons. Once solid, pop them into a sealed container for best results. You can defrost them at room temp. They won’t be the same as a fresh lemon, so use these for baking or cooking.

Half a lemon: Used just half a lemon? Cover the exposed end with food wrap or pop in a sealed container. Use it within a few days.

Lemon juice: You can keep fresh lemon juice in the fridge for a few days without any diminished quality. After a few days, the juice is best used in cooking or baking (not a fresh lemonade). Use it up within two weeks or freeze the rest. Just pop the juice into ice cube trays, remove when frozen and store in a sealed container.

Lemon wedges and slices: Like a halved lemon, lemon wedges and slices should be stored in a sealed container and used within the week.

Lemon zest: Don’t throw out a lemon rind without zesting it first! Even if you don’t have an immediate need for lemon zest, keeping some on hand is always a good idea.  A little zest livens up veggie sides and adds zip to baked goods. Use fresh lemon zest within a week. If you want to preserve it for longer, pop it in a sealed container in the freezer.
