When you have your nose inside a glass of Pyramid Ditto Session IPA, it’s hard to remember that it is a dark and rainy November evening. The fruity and citrus aromas of this Washington IPA take you away to warmer, sunnier times. Don’t worry you probably aren’t drunk, it is only your nose.
Pyramid’s Ditto IPA clocks in at only 4.5% ABV, part of the growing trend for Session beers. By definition, session beers are usually under 5.0% Alcohol By Volume (ABV). Session beers allow you to enjoy beers without sacrificing taste nor conversation over time. Low alcohol content does not mean low flavor content and in the case of the Ditto, certainly not low hop content. The low alcohol content does allow you to enjoy more than one over the afternoon or the evening and still remember everyone’s name!
Pyramid Breweries’ Ditto is a crystal clear amber Pacific Northwest style IPA. Your tongue tip is teased with a kiss of caramel before the hops steal the show. Sometimes dry hopping with Amarillo can not only steal the show but your palate as well. Some brewers don’t know when there is too much of a good thing, but that isn’t the case here. Head Brewer Ryan Pappe has demonstrated his skill in balance. The Ditto Session IPA is dry hopped with Amarillo and Calypso hops after being brewed with Chinook, Delta, and Nugget hops. The kettle hops giving the Ditto those delightful aromas. The 5 hop combination provides complexity and will satisfy hop lovers but it isn’t over done. Ryan showed restraint and knew when enough was enough to please the hop heads but not overpower the malts.
My mouth has a pleasing astringency after sipping the Pyramid Ditto Session IPA. It hasn’t nuked my palate for my dinner tonight, like some IPAs overly dry hopped Amarillo have done. I would easily and delightedly enjoy another Ditto while I finish cooking dinner. Ditto is a great session IPA to enjoy with friends, watching the game or even while cooking dinner! I didn’t ask, but I would guess the name Ditto came up because we use the word “ditto” to mean “say it again” and here you could easily drink Ditto again.
