Just be fully aware that there are going to be spoilers from Avengers: Infinity War included.  If you weren’t part of the mass that contributed over one-billion dollars to the movie, then you might want to sit back and avoid this article.

If you’re like me, you are still getting over everything that has happened in Avengers: Infinity War. The arrival of The Black Order. The conquest of Thanos. The fall of half our beloved heroes. The complete absence of Hawkeye. It was everything you could want in a movie.

But that was then — now it’s time to look to the future!

We can skip over the next two MCU features. Ant-Man and The Wasp looks great, and Captain Marvel is basically going to be Infinity War 1.5, but there’s another movie on the docket for next year that Marvel fans will once again be drooling over to see: the currently untitled Avengers 4.

That’s not exactly the title that strikes joy into the globe-scattered diehards. So far, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and his collection of movie masterminds have kept all lips sealed regarding the title of the next Avengers outing. The fear is that revealing the title would have cast a shadow on Infinity War, similar to what this recent flick did to the entire Phase 3. Now, things have ballooned out of proportion and Feige knows it.

“…It’s gotten entirely out of hand (The Avengers 4 title),” he told IGN last month.  “And now we’ll have no chance to living up to any expectations of what it’s gonna be. And it sort of backfired, if I’m honest with you.”

That’s a bold notion. Marvel fans have been standing on their hill, preaching the word of The MCU for years. No matter what the title is, fans will claim it to be amazing (and still criticize it at the same time… damn critics!)… all while dissecting every element of the font for some sort of clues. Could it be a Secret Wars story? What about including The X-Men or Fantastic Four? Will Deadpool actually show up? There are plenty of people who believe the title of the next movie will tells us exactly what the next movie is all about.

While I doubt Marvel is going to deliver a game-changing sub-title, I (like most others) will probably get excited about whatever they throw my way. So, with the caveats included that I know nothing and Marvel will continue to use misdirection to keep us guessing, I’m going to take a stab at five possible titles for the upcoming untitled Avengers 4 movie.

• Avengers: Reign of Thanos

First off, how amazing was that ending of Infinity War? No, I’m not talking about the snap of the fingers… or watching Spider-Man disappear into Iron Man’s arms like a pile of leaves. I’m talking about Thanos the farmer coming out of his cottage with a sense of peace strung across his face. It was a scene straight out of the Infinity Gauntlet comic, including the shot of Thanos’ armor being propped up as a scarecrow.

Now he has unlimited power. The Gauntlet is complete, and The Mad Titan can sit back and rule over the galaxy for all eternity. By calling the next movie Reign of Thanos, you will understand that this movie will focus on him leading the universe all while swatting away any pretenders trying to take his throne. Should this prove to be the title, it would make sense to hold off the unveiling, since it would completely spoil the ending of Infinity War long before the movie even made it to theaters. It wouldn’t be the sexiest title (something Feige has alluded to)… but it would give the movie a proper start without raising expectations for the story.

• Avengers: Disassembled

So, I’m completely ripping off this idea from fellow Source writer Keith, who brought this to my attention months ago… and it makes perfect sense. Half of the universe is no more.  That includes half of the Avengers — they are, in fact, disassembled. There’s only one problem with this title — it would raise the expectation that the movie would take elements of the 2004 comic series and incorporate it into the story. While it would be a cool name (with plenty of marketing potential), it would probably lead to too much confusion. Sure, the Age of Ultron title was taken from the comics — and didn’t really include elements from that story — but it’s hard to believe that Marvel would go back to that well twice.

• Avengers: Assemble

Simple. To the point. In my opinion, it’s the perfect title for one reason. Throughout the talk show rounds being made by the extensive Avengers cast, we were promised one thing: one scene featuring over 40 heroes going into battle. Some would believe that this was the Battle of Wakanda combined with the assault on Titan. However, I refuse to believe that.

Avengers 3 and 4 were shot simultaneously and not necessarily in order (meaning the actors may not know what movie they’re talking about during early interviews). That means there could be a battle scene waiting in the next Avengers movie, where all the heroes reunite for a true final stand. It would be super-appropriate to see every hero to date standing side-by-side in one epic shot before Captain America screams “Avengers Assemble!”  It’s the movie moment many Cap fans have been waiting for… and to finally be delivered before the biggest moment in the MCU, it might actually cause some fans to pass out right into their popcorn.

• Avengers: Infinity Gauntlet

It would be the worst entry possible, but it can’t be ruled out. Feige has gone on record stating that the next movie “will not” be called Infinity Gauntlet, but we’ve been lied to before and there could be some legs to this idea. Immediately after snapping his fingers, Thanos was absorbed right into the Soul Stone. Perhaps that’s where his farm is, too. If that’s the case, perhaps the plot of Avengers 4 includes dipping into the Quantum Realm to find a passage into The Soul World (hello plot of Ant-Man and The Wasp). By calling the movie Infinity Gauntlet, you’re literally telling viewers the movie will take place within the Gauntlet itself. It has a real Fantastic Voyage feel to it. Let’s just hope I’m completely off base on this one.

• Avengers: Rise of Hawkeye (A BONUS ADDITION!!!)

This was just for fun. But just imagine a scenario where after Thanos snapped his fingers, Clint Barton watched his entire family dissolve in front of his eyes. He then goes on a psychotic rage-fueled revenge mission killing everyone in his path until he gets to The Mad Titan. There would be so much purple in that final battle between the two, you’d have to include a Prince song in the background just because. Considering one of the original MCU Avengers was completely M.I.A. for Infinity War, Hawkeye needs some sort of massive story for the next outing. Renner going complete John Wick on a gauntlet-wielding deity would do it for me.

• Avengers: Endgame

It’s the one that makes the most sense. There’s a reason everyone and their mother is proclaiming that this will be the title, ‘cause we were smacked right in the face with it.

Right before Doctor Strange is about to go out with the breeze, he informs Tony Stark that they are all “in the endgame now”. After witnessing over four million different outcomes in the battle with Thanos (with only one viable path to victory), Strange is aware that an Avengers success is imminent… they just have to play the story out. It’s a great way to wrap up the story from Infinity War without resorting to calling it Part 2 (the original bland title).

There are still plenty of other routes Marvel could go with for the next Avengers title. It could be The Rise of Galactus. Fall of Heroes. Or even Avengers: The Inevitable Reboot. The honest truth is, it doesn’t matter. The title is only secondary to the story being told… and from what we’ve seen with Infinity War, Avengers 4’s actual movie will completely over shadow any title-controversy that could possible manifest.

Now, if we could just get a little more Hawkeye!
