Travel: Best Christmas Markets in Gothenburg

Gothenburg is one of Sweden’s major cities. It is situated off the Gota alv river on the west coast. It is known for its Dutch style canals and leafy boulevards. Its main strip is lined with shops and cafes. It is home to Liseburg, a popular amusement park, performance venues and a landscaped sculpture garden.

The city is great to visit any time of year, but it’s especially beautiful at Christmastime. During the holiday season, several Christmas markets take place bringing life to the streets of the city. Here are some you can check out when you’re in the neighborhood.

Liseberg Christmas Markets

The Liseberg amusement park really lights up during the holiday season. Guests can enjoy riding the many thrill rides and they can also visit Santa in his workshop, enjoy an ice-skating show, dine on a Swedish Christmas buffet and check out the five million Christmas lights.

It’s also a place where you can check out two Christmas markets in one location. These include:

The Liseberg Old Fashioned Market: This market features rows of stalls selling a variety of goods including Christmas decorations, hot chocolate, caramel apples, churros, mulled wine and roasted nuts.

The Liseberg Designer Market: Take the festively decorated escalator upstairs to arrive at the upscale Liseberg Designer Market in Liseberg Tower. It’s a great place to find designer goods and handicrafts made by well known Swedish brands and independent designers.

In addition to shopping at the markets, you will also be able to dine at the Swedish Christmas Buffet. It takes place at the Stjarnornas Krog restaurant inside the park. Guests can feast on Swedish delicacies like julskinka (Christmas ham), gravid lax (cured salmon), sill (pickled herring), lussekatter (saffron buns) and risgrunsgrot (rice pudding.

Be sure to leave room for the gottebord, a traditional Swedish table laid out with an assortment of delectable treats.

Then head over to the ice-skating rink to catch the daily ice ballet show. Performers act out a variety of Christmas skits including a Christmas Carol. Performances take place at 7 PM on weekdays, at 4:30 and 7 PM on Saturdays and 5 PM on Sundays. The rink is open to the public before the performance.

There are also tons of amusement park rides to enjoy including rollercoasters, carousels, haunted houses, bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, kiddie rides and more. The Park can get cold during the winter and the rides will add to the wind chill making it feel even colder. Thankfully, there are several firepits located throughout the area.

The market kicks off in mid-November and is open on select dates through the end of the year.

Haga Christmas Markets

Hage Nygata is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Sweden making it the ideal location for a Christmas market. The charming streets are decorated with spruces and vendors sell unique products and seasonal treats. There is also horseback riding for children and live music performances.

The market opens in late November and closes before Christmas.

Gothenburg Art and Design Fair

The Gothenburg Art and Design Fair happens at Roda Sten Konsthall. Once a boiler house, it now serves as a space for artists to display their works. During the holiday season, vendors set up in the cathedral area selling their crafts.

The market has a modern edge ensuring you will find a great contemporary gift. It features work from local and international designers.

Roda Sten Konsthall is located under Alvsborg bridge at the harbor entrance. The best way to get there is by ferry. It’s a 15-minute ride from the city center.

The fair takes place over the course of a weekend in late November/early December.

Kronhuset Market

This traditional market happens in Kronhuset in one of the city’s oldest preserved buildings. Guests can find a variety of goods that will make ideal Christmas gifts. It’s one of the best places to enjoy a glass of glogg, Swedish mulled wine.

The market kicks off in late December and closes before Christmas.

Gothenburg is a terrific place to visit and it’s especially wonderful when its markets fill the streets. Now that you know which ones to head out to, you are ready for your trip. Which of these will you be checking out first?
