How to Re-Motivate Yourself to Workout

You might be finding yourself in a bit of an exercise slump right now (especially if you’re reading this during the global pandemic). You want to Workout, you want to get stronger, you want to feel fitter. But you’re just not feeling it!

I’ve been there and it can be pretty frustrating having these two conflicting emotions playing tug-of-war. But it means it’s time to re-motivate yourself to workout!

Find your why.

I’m sure you’ve heard this phrase in at least one other context and that’s because it is SO KEY. Finding your why means finding your motivation for doing what it is you want to do! In terms of working out, your why could be a variety of things. Here are some ideas:

  • To feel stronger.
  • To feel healthier.
  • To keep up with your kids.
  • To reach that goal of running that marathon or climbing that mountain.
  • To feel more confident.
  • To increase your daily energy.
  • To sleep better.
  • To age better.

Getting clear on why you want to workout will help spark your motivation to get moving again.

Try something new.

You might be bored with your current fitness routine. I know I’m the kind of person who thrives on variety, so I move through different workouts and class styles all the time. Here are some ideas for different workouts you can try:

  • Lifting weights.
  • Running.
  • Swimming.
  • Dance cardio.
  • Yoga.
  • Martial arts.
  • Basketball.
  • Bootcamp.

For myself lately, one week of workouts will include a Tabata workout, strength training, running, pilates, and a HIIT workout. Like I said, I’m a big fan of variety.

Take it outside if you can.

Or simply change locations! Having something else to look at might be just the thing to re-energize your workouts. You can try moving your workout outside, to a different gym, the playground, a different room in your house, the backyard, and more.

Find a buddy or community.

You might need someone next to you giving you inspiration or going through the workout with you. This can look like asking a friend to be your buddy, hiring a trainer, joining a group class, or joining an online community. Having people going on the journey with you can motivate you to not quit on them, or make you feel supported knowing you have people going through the same thing as you.

Join a Challenge.

There are tons of workout challenges online and through gyms. If you already go to a gym, check their social media for upcoming challenges you can join. Lots of online fitness instructors host their own evergreen or time-sensitive challenges that can be the kick in the butt to get you going.

Our attitudes, behaviours, emotions, and mindsets ebb and flow, and with that, so will our motivation to workout. So if you’re finding you’re in a slump, try one of these techniques.

ALSO! Be kind to yourself and listen to your body. It’s okay if your slump is actually a call for rest. Only you know if that’s truly the case, but there’s no need to feel guilty if it is. The break itself might re-motivate you to start moving again.

How do you re-motivate yourself to workout?Enjoy the journey,
