What Happens When You Stop Learning

Humans are curious. We like to explore, we like novelty, we have questions, we search for answers.

We like to learn.

But sometimes humans have a tendency to think that once they’ve mastered a skill or become a high ranking member of their field, they know everything they need to know and they can stop Learning

But problems can arise when you stop learning.

You don’t get to learn more cool stuff.

Imagine not being able to learn anything else. Imagine you’ve totally tapped out the knowledge of your field and there’s nothing more to work towards. An accomplishment? Sure. But also kind of sad.

Humans thrive on working towards the next thing. If you stop learning, you miss out on that drive that gives you purpose or a goal.

You think you’re always right, even when you’re not.

Theories, techniques, and the knowledge in every field are changing. But when you decide that you don’t need to learn anymore just because you’ve learned a lot, you start thinking that you’re right, even when you’re not. Because you stopped learning, you’re missing the new discoveries that debunk what you knew to be true. You’re missing the slow changes that are occurring and leaving you behind. Meanwhile, you’re claiming to be all-knowing when it’s just not true.

You have a closed mind.

When you stop learning, you become less receptive to other opinions, thought-processes, and ideas. Why is this a bad thing? Our culture is constantly evolving and you’ll either go with it by learning about those new perspectives, or you’ll be left behind. It’s also important to be open to new ideas in order to grow as a human being.

You become Static.

What all of the above paragraphs are pointing towards is that when you stop learning, you become static. And when we’re static, or when we’re not moving, we’re not living.

Your static lifestyle means that you’re not progressing with the world around you. It means you’re stuck inside your own head, believing only in your thoughts.

You are absolutely allowed to choose to live your no-learning, no-progressing life. But isn’t it more fun to be challenged? To experience new things? To open your mind to new things and (gasp) even change your opinion on something???
