They only ever say it at key moments, they only ever say it when really the last thing you can do is stop and let them have a wee, they save up the normal wee’s for moments of calm and serenity, but when the chips are down and you are late for something, that’s when its always desperate, that is when you find yourself on the side of a 12 lane highway at 4 in the morning late for a flight desperately trying to squeeze every drop out of a 4 year old in the hope the police don’t show up and arrest you for indecency.
That is how we started our Secret Holiday last week, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. After a whole year of having more screen shots of my phones lock-screen than holiday pictures we finally found an opportunity to get on a flight and get out of Qatar and take on a whole new kind of adventure.
Let me explain the secrecy. Qatar firmly closed its borders in March 2019 and we have been “locked in” since then, we all recognise that we are very probably the luckiest people in the world as our glorified lock-in has meant we haven’t really had to lock-down for most of C19. Well done us. Sadly however the situation is not the same at home, and it is painfully obvious to all of us here that sending you pictures of the sunshine and beaches we are so lucky to live with doesn’t help morale or make you very popular. We agreed it would be better not to tell anyone about our travels as no one likes a smug prick.
So here is a picture not from my holiday in the Maldives. Sorry.
As I didn’t lose you, I can explain a bit more. Qatar Airways opened up a “Travel Bubble” to 3 island resorts in The Maldives over the half term break, and like any self respecting expat we leapt at the chance to get away and so long as you don’t tell Lexi that you now know about it, our secret holiday will stay secret forever.
It won’t surprise you to know travelling during COVID is not the same, the fun, the romance, the efficiency has all gone and its been replaced with a version of travel I can only compare to a cup of warm sick. A cotton bud scraped around the back of your brain leads to 20 minutes of anxiety induced panic as you wait to find out if you have the all clear to board your plane. Obviously the airlines have asked you to come to the airport 3 hours before you are allowed to board your oxygen starved flight, where every sip of Gin or mouthful of delicious plane food feels like you are breathing in 300 passengers covid infused exhales. However at the other end The Maldives delivered on its promise of paradise almost more perfectly than any where else I have ever been and suddenly it all felt worth while.
I am painfully aware none of you base your own experiences on my slightly ridiculous takes on travel. But sometimes I stumble across something that is worth sharing, and being the world renewed influencer that I am, allow me to try and influence you just a little. Sandies Bathala is a heavenly slice of paradise hewn from volcanic risings that have created a magical atol that is nothing short of complete and utter bliss. If the ultimate relaxation is only achievable when you have no shoes on and dodgy phone reception then this is it. The island has no floors except in your bedroom, the showers have no roofs and are open to the sky, our rooms lead onto stunning white sands that rolled down to the sea and across the nature stuffed reef that surrounds the whole island, and that is where a whole new kind of adventure awaited us.
