Adventure of the Seas by Royal Caribbean: Tips for a Memorable Cruise

The Adventure of the Seas operated by Royal Caribbean is a Voyager Class Cruise ship that is perfect for first time cruisers. When the ship went on it’s maiden voyage in November 2001, it was the largest cruise ship on the water. Today, it does not hold that title but it is still a very large ship that has everything you would expect on a cruise.

Adventure of the Seas can hold up to 3,807 guests. While that seems like a lot of people, there is plenty to do on the ship that it never feels too crowded in one area. Even on sea days you will find there is plenty to do.

If you are planning your first cruise and looking for something that’s not too big but still has plenty to offer. Check out all the info down below on the Adventure of the Seas. We will talk about the rooms, dining, and things to do around the ship.

Rooms

On Adventure of the Seas, there are four different room types you can pick from. You can get an interior cabin. They come in between 106 to 256 sq ft. This is your most budget friendly cabin you can choose. It is perfect if you don’t plan on spending any time in your room and remember there are no windows in these rooms either.

The next type of room you can pick is an ocean view room. These rooms come in between 161 to 328 sq ft. Ocean view rooms offer a little more space and a great view of the ocean.

Balcony Room deck 6

Balcony rooms are the next type of room you can book. These offer even more space than the other two room types. Balcony rooms come in between 162 to 207 sq ft. The big draw with these rooms are your own private balcony overlooking the ocean.

One thing to note about these rooms. They are great for two adults. Don’t try squeezing another adult or even a teenager in these rooms. It is doable but you will be very close. Also the showers can be a bit tough to get use to if you are a bigger person.

The last room type aboard Adventure of the Seas is the suites. Here you will find the junior suites along with one and two bedroom suites. You will find these rooms offer plenty of room to move around in and most come with a tub.

If you have the money, a suite is the way to go. I recently stayed in a junior suite for my first cruise. There were three of us in the room and it never felt overcrowded. There was plenty of storage space for all of our stuff.

One thing to note about any of the rooms you decide to book for your cruise is the lack of outlets. We had one outlet in our room. You will want to pick up an outlet extender. Just don’t get one that has a cord.

Dining Options

While onboard the Adventure of the Seas you won’t have any problem finding great food. You can choose to go to the Main Dining Room, the Windjammer (Buffet), or Cafe Promenade. All of them are included with the price of your cruise. All three have some amazing food.

The Main Dining Room offers that classic cruise ship feel. Here you will be seated at a table and get to pick any number of items from a menu that is different each day. If you want to different starters, go for it.

Want to try two different main courses? Just let your waiter know you’d like the steak and chicken for tonight. Everything we had in the Main Dining room was amazing. I almost wish it wasn’t so good. I had a lot of food on the cruise.

The Windjammer is the place to go if you like have many options to pick from. They will have some things that you can find on the menu in the Main Dining Room and many that you won’t. If you have children who are picky eaters, the Windjammer is the place for you.

They have everything you can think of for breakfast. Eggs many different ways, bacon, sausage, waffles, pancakes, cereal, and so much more. For lunch and dinner you will find beef, chicken, lamb, burgers, chicken fingers, hot dogs, and many others. Plus so many different dessert options you won’t have room for them all.

Cafe Promenade is a great place to grab a bite to eat late at night or early in the morning. My daughter and her friend loved to grab pizza late at night. She called it her midnight pizza run. Let me tell you, the pizza wasn’t that bad.

Don’t worry there are more dining options for you on the Adventure of the Seas. However, the others will cost you a little bit of money depending on where you go. You can get a nice sushi dining or lunch at Izumi.

Grab a nice steak at Chops. Or get some great Italian food at Giovanni’s. If you are craving a burger and fries you can swing by Johnny Rockets. While you are there make sure to grab yourself a delicious milkshake.

If you can’t tell, one thing you won’t do is go hungry while onboard the ship. From 6am till after midnight you will be able to find at least one of these places are open serving food.

Things to do onboard

80’s Night

When you are not eating you will want to find something to do to pass the time. You won’t have any trouble finding something for you or your family to do while cruising the open ocean. There is a nice pool with two hot tubs for all to enjoy on deck 11.

While the pool might not be the largest on the ocean. It is a decent size with plenty of seating all over the deck. If you want a little adult’s only time be sure to check out Solarium. This is an adult only area on the ship with a pool, bar, and hot tub. It is a nice place to go and relax without a bunch of kids running around.

The Solarium

If you are looking to try and win a free cruise, the place you want to be at is the casino. Now just remember this place is very tight. There is not a lot of room to move around. You shouldn’t have any problems making new friends down here.

Adventure of the Seas offers many unique and interesting shows to check out. Each night you will find a couple of different shows going on in different areas of the ship. If the Quest game show (18+) is going on be sure to check that one out. It was a whole lot of fun.

Some of the other activities you will find onboard are an ice skating rink (remember to bring pants), water slides, Flowrider, game courts, mini golf, and many other things explore.

Throughout the ship you can also find a bunch of different bars and lounges. Each day there is a special drink that is worth a try. Or just go and order your favorite drink. Chances are one of the amazing bartenders can make it.

Tips

If you never cruised before or it has been a while, these tips can help make your cruise experience a little better. I, like you, did a lot of research before my first cruise. These tips are some of the best you will find.

If you plan to drink a couple bottles of water, alcohol, and soda, get the drink package. Most of the time you can find it for around $75 a day. Most mixed drinks will cost you $14 each. Plus bottles of water will cost you money too. Tap water is free and so is juice and tea in the Windjammer.

Explore the ship on your first day before your room is ready. Rooms typically are not ready till after 1pm. This gives you plenty of time to explore the ship and have an idea where everything is located.

Choose a dining time for the Main Dining Room if you plan to eat there every night. If this is your first cruise you will want to do this. Dining in the Main Dining Room takes about an hour but is so worth your time. If you have an assigned time for the MDR you won’t have to wait in a long line for a table to become available.

Plan on spending a lot of time waiting on an elevator. If you are only going up or down one or two decks it is usually quicker to take the stairs.

Tip the waiters on the main pool deck (deck 11). They might just make your trip for you. The waiter I had, Deepan, remembered my name and my drink order the very next morning. He also would bring me out bottles of water every couple of rounds. He really made my vacation.

Wait until day 2 to go to customer service if you can. There is a huge line for customer service on the first day.

Umbrella Street Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

Don’t plan too much for your shore days. We ended up not booking any excursions and just explored the areas on our own. We walked through the streets of Puerto Plata. Just hung out around the pier in Turks. While in CocoCay we enjoyed the beach. You might want to save the excursions for your second cruise.

You can and will feel the ship moving. It’s not a lot of movement but you can still feel it a little bit. It won’t rock you off your feet or anything but just be aware that you will most likely feel the ship moving.

You can make your cruise as adventurous or relaxing as you’d like. I loved that I didn’t have to drive for 6 days. I also tried some foods I would have never thought of. I really enjoyed the escargot in the Main Dining Room. I would never order that if I went out to eat but I tried it on the ship. Turns out it was delicious and I would recommend anyone to try it.

If you plan to gamble just remember for every $5 you bet you get 1 point. Once you get 250 points you can start earning rewards like $100 off your next cruise. If you make it to 1500 points you can earn a free cruise on select voyages. Once you hit 2500 points in one year (April 1 to March 31) you can get free drinks in the casino and a free cruise each year you hold that tier.

If you are planning on booking a cruise with Royal Caribbean, I would suggest you look into the Adventure of the Seas. While it isn’t there biggest ship. It is plenty big enough with more for you to do than you can in a week.

We really enjoyed our first cruise on Adventure of the Seas and plan to book another cruise in a year or two. This just might be a new thing we do every other year. It was a lot of fun and I think you would enjoy it too.

Are you planning on booking a cruise in the next year or two? Have you been cruising before? Have you sailed on Adventure of the Seas? Let us know in the comments below.
