Simon Jordan believes this season will finally be Liverpool’s year where they end their long wait to be crowned Premier League champions.

The talkSPORT pundit made his, apparently regretful, title prediction on Friday’s Sports Breakfast, with the Premier League starting again on August 9 when Liverpool play Norwich.

Last season’s high-quality title race was one of the closest ever, as Liverpool recorded the highest points tally in their history yet were still beaten to the trophy by Manchester City.

The Reds’ 97 points would have been enough to see them lift the title in every Premier League season bar two – this year and the last – as City broke the 100 point barrier for the first time in 2017/18 before successfully defending their title with 98 points in the 18/19 campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s men, though, ended their season on a high by lifting the club’s sixth European Cup, beating Tottenham 2-0 in the Champions League final.

And Jordan believes that victory will give the Reds, whose last title triumph came in 1990, the confidence to finally break their Premier League duck, although he apparently doesn’t like admitting it.

Speaking to host Laura Woods, the former Crystal Palace owner said: “It’s going to be very tight, but I think Liverpool winning the Champions League might give them that little bit of extra impetus because Jurgen Klopp has now got the monkey off his back.

“As much as it galls me, I’d like to see Liverpool win the Premier League because I think it adds to the stable of winners.

“A Liverpool side that has not won the Premier League, given their history and given the history of English football over the last 50 years, it doesn’t seem entirely right.

“Manchester City have an elite coach… but I think Liverpool will win the league.

“If they can keep Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino fit, it doesn’t look like they’re going to add to their roster significantly but they’ve got players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming back in with a point to prove and he was doing really well for them behind he got that injury.

“I think it will be Liverpool but I think it’ll be nip and tuck between them and Manchester City.”
