Dani Alves completes Sao Paulo transfer despite interest from Tottenham and Manchester City

Sao Paulo have completed the signing of former Barcelona defender Dani Alves.

The veteran full-back has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with the Brazilian giants, it was announced on Thursday.

The 36-year-old was a free agent after his two-year contract with PSG expired this summer.

Alves had been linked with a host of clubs around Europe, including his former club Barcelona and both Tottenham and Manchester City, however, he has decided to return to Brazil in the hope of landing a World Cup spot in 2022.

In a statement from Sao Paulo, club president Carlos Augusto de Barros e Silva said: “Daniel Alves is the embodiment of what this management envisions for Sao Paulo – one of the leading players in the world and recognised for his immense professionalism, his fierce determination and his endless thirst for titles and victories.”

“He is also a socially engaged citizen and passionate about our country. Sao Paulo, therefore, wins on every possible front.

“One day I told Daniel that he would come to play at Sao Paulo, the club of his heart. Today I have the immense joy and pride to have kept that promise.”

Alves is the most decorated player in the history of football, taking his career haul to 43 trophies by guiding Brazil to the Copa America last month.

Egyptian legend Hossam Hassan, who dominated the game in his native country with Ahly SC and Zamalek, is second on the list, having won 41 honours.

And his ex-team-mate at Barcelona Andres Iniesta is also sitting pretty in third in the standings, having won 37 trophies – level with another Egyptian, Ibrahim Hassan and former PSG star Maxwell.

“I could’ve picked any other team to play for,” Alves said. “But I chose to come back to Brazil, to my country, to my people. To the club I love.

“It’s unreal, but I’m here!”

Last week, Alves jokingly took to social media to ask where he should send his CV as he looked for his next club.

But his future has now been resolved and he will now play at club level in his homeland for the first time in 17 years.
