How Are You Really Doing?

It is important to not only help those around us and the people we love but also to take care of our own physical and mental health. Adjusting to the global shut downs, economic losses, job losses, health risks and death tolls as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic has been an eye-opening, overwhelming and traumatic experience for the world and while we are experiencing this together we are all unique and respond to it differently.

There is also added anxiety and we expect to get a better sense of the real toll that all of this has taken on people, families and their livelihoods now that some countries are slowly re-opening businesses and easing travel restrictions, while others remain in a state of emergency.


Today's article is a check-in and a check-up on our amazing readers to not only see how everyone is doing but most importantly to provide tips and strategies that will help to reduce anxiety, manage stress and help others who may be having a harder time than most coping mentally.

One in five people will experience a mental illness in their lifetime and the month of May has been observed as Mental Health Awareness month since 1949. With that in mind we hope this article helps to create awareness and break the stigma associated with anxiety and depression.



How Do You Respond to Stress?


Personality Lackluster
Some are unable to do much, lose track of time as the hours and days pass by and spend the days simply trying to get by.


Personality Burn Out
Some cope with fear and uncertainty by trying to keep busy with projects around the home, organizing, tackling old and new goals, which can  be exhausting both physically and mentally and could result in burn out.


Personality Negative Thoughts
Some allow fear to take over and begin to imagine the worst, which can be either crippling or stirs up an extreme sense of hopelessness that could result in contemplating harming oneself to escape it all.


Personality Anger
For some the fear of not being in control of our lives and future results in a build up of anger and a desperate will to regain the stability and sense of normalcy that we've lost, so we put not only ourselves in harms way but risk the lives of others as well.


Personality Abuse
Others try to regain their freedom and control with harmful actions that directly results in the physical, verbal, mental and emotional abuse of others as they seek to either point the finger, pass blame or release their own frustrations.


Personality Escape
Many try to escape it all by suppressing their thoughts and numbing their emotions using temporary feel good substances such as alcohol and other substances that include both legal and illegal drugs that could create an even bigger problem of addiction and dependency in the long run.


Personality Stress Management
Others acknowledge how they feel and then proceed to work on those feeling of stress, fear, anxiety and uncertainty in healthy ways.  Dealing with each moment as it comes by using stress reducing tools like (music, exercise, reading, prayer, meditation, keep a daily journal, dance, family time, hobbies, doing good, therapy etc) to remain hopeful, grateful and help them to not only cope but continue to thrive despite the circumstances.

This does not mean that personality stress management has it all figured out. It simply means that they hope and believe that they will get through it and will be wiser, stronger and better because of it.  Most importantly they are actively working toward that goal. While strengthening their resolve one day and one step at a time.

This hope they feel did not drop out of thin air, it comes from the strength gained through past experiences, lessons learned from others and their own life journey. They are willing to educate themselves about the current situation, learn how others dealt with similar circumstances in the past and to try new techniques that will help them to deal with and overcome negative emotions and behaviors.



How to Effectively Manage Stress

Effectively managing stress is certainly the healthier way to get through difficult situations like the global pandemic and economic downturns that we are currently experiencing but it takes some of us much longer to get to that point than others. We have shared practical stress management techniques and more helpful ideas below that we hope will help you to effectively navigate and get through these uncertain times and the stressors that lie ahead. 



1. Identify your personality type:
The first step is to identify where you are on the personality spectrum right now. Whether you fit just one personality type, a combination or fluctuate between them based on the day and circumstance.


2. Acknowledge your feelings:
We can all become better at coping and getting through difficult situations by acknowledging how we feel.


3. Ask for and accept help:
Knowing our stressors or what pushes us over the edge and not being afraid to reach out and ask for help when we are struggling is extremely important in dealing with stressful situations. Talking and confiding in a loved one, friend or professional counselor or therapist will help you to express your feelings and voice your thoughts in a positive way instead of harming yourself mentally and physically by keeping them in.


4. Practice self care:

Eat Healthy: Fuel your body with the nutrients it needs and remember to start your day of right with a delicious plus nutritious breakfast for a happier, healthier you! Avoid greasy foods with high glycemic indexes, which will make you feel bloated, sluggish and lethargic. You can also clean up your diet and improve how you feel by eating leafy greens  and fruits packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which help to naturally boost your energy levels.



Exercise Regularly: Exercise releases a floodgate of endorphins and getting a good workout can be a major stress-reliever. Simple ways to exercise when you can't get to the gym include frequently using the stairs, dance workouts that you can do in your living room. Or doing twenty minutes of stretches, jumping jacks, sit-ups, jump rope and push-ups.

Walking or jogging in your neighborhood or local park for thirty minutes to an hour is also a great way to get a change of scene, take some deep breaths of fresh air, and find peace in the beauty of nature. (Remember to stay safe by practicing social distancing)



Rest Up:
Sleep is also essential for our overall health. Too little sleep can affect your mood, make you less emotionally resilient, more prone to depression, lead to weight gain, weaken your immune system, and the list goes on. Make sure you’re getting a recommended seven to nine hours every night and if you’re not, try to sneak in an afternoon nap.


Use Stress Relief Techniques:
Some effective ways to reduce your stress levels and boost your mood include; listening to soothing music, reading, praying, practicing breathing exercises, keeping a daily journal, dancing, having lighthearted conversation with family and friends and enjoying personal hobbies like painting etc.



Relax and Unwind:
Unwind at the end of a stressful day with a warm bath that will help to soothe tense muscles, relax the body and calm your mind.



How to Help Others

Knowing the personality spectrum will also help you to understand how others around you are doing and help you to see the signs for those who are at the edge so you can reach out and offer help or guide them toward a source more equipped to provide the help that they need.
