4 Tips on How Not to Get Dumped

If you’re waiting for us to start blathering on about the four different love languages and how to best express your heartfelt commitment, then we do so hope you’re in your most comfortable chair, because you’re going to be waiting a while.

We think some of the best relationship tips are the smallest ones. Mostly because they’re the easiest to accomplish, but also because even the tiniest changes can yield big results. Here are four things to keep in mind when it comes to keeping your girlfriend, wife or Partner happy.

Tip #1: Stop Buying Flowers

What we really mean is stop Buying Flowers just because you messed up. You know what happens when you only buy your partner flowers when you’ve done something boneheaded? They come to hate flowers and associate them with you being an idiot. Instead, splurge on a few no-reason bouquets per year, and practice delivering an apology that’s good enough that it doesn’t require a gift to come with it.

Tip #2: Compromise Doesn’t Have to Mean one Person is Unhappy

There are roughly three million movies in between the latest Sylvester Stallone grunt-fest and Meg Ryan’s sappiest rom-com. Compromising doesn’t mean you take turns getting your way, it means that you find the middle road and travel down it happily. There’s no reason for a cake-or-pie debate to turn into World War III when cookies exist. Come on. If you’re regularly going to adopt a ‘my way or the highway’ attitude then you’d better be prepared for your partner to peel out at 50 miles per hour.

Tip #3: Go to Bed Angry

Yep, this is contrary to every piece of advice everyone’s mom’s favorite magazine dispenses but think about how often you wake up the morning after a major blowout and realize that whatever you were so desperately shouting about the night before really doesn’t matter at all. Sometimes we just need a cooling-off period to realize what’s important and what isn’t. Mutually agree to walk away from the conversation, and reconvene when you’re both feeling calm.

Tip #4: Don’t Complain to Your Friends

If you have something critical to say about your partner’s behavior or tendencies, say it to your partner. The initial sting will be nothing compared to what he or she will feel when she eventually and inevitably realizes you’ve been dishing the dirt on her most annoying habits to your buddies on game day. If you keep up your blabbermouth activities then we hope you have been watching those Sylvester Stallone movies, because you’re going to need to know how to defend yourself.
