Three Tips on How to Choose an Online Yoga Teacher and a 60-Minute Beginner Yoga Practice

The Mindful Soul Center (formerly Conscious Life Space)

Practicing yoga virtually online has its pros and cons!

Doing Yoga online can be challenging for some people but it's worth a try if you haven't done it yet. Every week the Mindful Soul Center (Since April 1st) has been offering free yoga classes in their virtual studio. They are live classes led by Amy Adams and there are either one or two classes available each week to accommadate people in different time zones. One class per week is then made available on our YouTube channel as well so you can practice anytime, anywhere. No excuses! But, before I share the latest practice with you (you'll find it when you scroll down) I wanted to share some tips to finding someone to lead you in practice online.

Tip: Try out different teachers.

One thing to consider when choosing a practice or lesson to follow is do you vibe with the teacher? Try out different teachers. Not all teachers are for all people. It's important to choose a person that you feel comfortable with and that you can easily follow. Can follow along easily to their verbal and visual cues? Verbal cues are extremely important when practicing with others online. We don't want to spend a lot of time twisting our bodies looking at a screen. When you continually work with a teacher you will become aware of their cues and style through repetition. I found and follow two different teachers regularly online choosing their videos depending on my energy level, mood, and know when I need to push myself. I've even met both of them in person and practiced with them traveling thousands of miles/km to do so and look forward to participating in their retreats in the next couple of years. The internet is an amazing connector and tool! Sometimes, I try other yoga teachers as well. Find the teacher that works for you.

Tip: Preview portions of selected videos first.

Preview portions of selected videos before getting on your mat. When I started to follow various yoga practices online, trying different teachers, beforehand I would watch a portion of the video before getting on the mat. You can adjust the speed as well so you can quickly get an idea what's included in the video. Once chosen, it was onto the mat.

Tip: Do at least two videos from a specific instructor.

Practices even with the same teacher can vary since they may be focusing on different things in each video or offering various levels of practice. Then the goal is try a couple of different practices with one teacher. Plus, there may even be some technical issues (for instance a couple of the Mindful Soul Center videos 1st videos had some audio quirks - they're still doable but the audio has improved.) It's important to find out if they are someone you can follow easily, feel challenged but not overly stressed and that you feel comfortable practicing yoga with.

Mindful Soul Center Yoga: One Hour Beginners Standing Balance Yoga Practice

We begin warming and preparing the body with Cat and Cow, plank Pose and child's pose, moving to Sphinx Pose and Locust Pose. We continue with moving the body before we practice Sun Salutation A. We then practice our balance with Eagle Arms in Chair OR Garuda pose with legs wrapped, a variation of Chair Pose where our legs in a figure 4 shape and then Tree Pose. Finally, we move to Crescent Lunge, Half-Splits, and Warrior One. We begin to close our practice with Camel Pose, Seated Forward Fold, Bridge Pose, and Reclining Bound Angle Pose and of course closing with Corpse Pose aka Savasana.

I am unable to fully express both Camel Pose and Garuda Pose, so I've included some graphics here to show you the full expressions and have included modifications for Garuda Pose. The modifications are explained and shown in the video as well.

You can find timestamps in the video's description on YouTube if you want to jump directly to the practice and skip the intro.

If you suffer from any injuries or disease please consult with a physician or medical professional before practicing yoga. Techniques presented in this video are not a substitute for medical advice. Please consult your physician before beginning any new exercise program. [the] Mindful Soul Center assumes no responsibility for injuries suffered while practicing these techniques. Everybody is different. Do not force poses or strain yourself. Overexertion will prevent you from sustaining a practice. Some days we'll feel stronger or more flexible and other days we need to take it easy. Find the middle path where you can exert yourself yet relax into a pose. I cannot stress enough that you are responsible for your own well being. I can assist and guide you but since we are practicing online you will have to monitor and know your own physical limitations.
