Since the turn of the century, the Science of Gratitude has become a topic of interest amongst neuroscientists, psychologists, and social scientists. Neuroscientists have been studying how it rewires our brains, and psychologists and social scientists have been studying gratitude trying to understand its impact on our well-being. They’re putting all the data together proving that it improves well-being by reducing anxiety and stress, as well as, increases empathy, inspires us to move forward in life, and encourages us to take better care of ourselves. We’re even more likely to participate in daily exercise and improve our diet too. When I was thinking about writing my gratitude course and book I read a lot about the science, but frankly, I didn’t need science to tell me it worked. I knew from personal life experience that it worked and that is what I shared in my first book, Gratitude Shmatitude: Don’t Just Think It, Do It. I also excluded the science from the book because my book is a practical guide, I’m not a scientist and, um well – we have the internet.

Gratitude often has a large impact on overall happiness and well-being – says science.

But alas, in case you needed proof, we have lots of it. It turns out there is overwhelming proof that gratitude restructures and rewires the brain (in a good way). Advances in technology have given scientists the tools to prove it. Yay! woohoo for technology! Yes, I love technology! It gives us so many gifts and opportunities to explore and learn together.

Learn together that’s CLS’ fav hashtag when exploring some of the topics covered here, because part of Conscious Life Space‘s mission is to share info to enhance our lives as we #learntogether. Hence, I wanted to share this audio documentary with you here, as well as a few tidbits and some other links in case you need more convincing that gratitude is good for you! But instead of packing all the science in one article, I have split the science into two articles. This one where you can listen to this audio documentary on the science of gratitude as you prepare Thanksgiving dinner or anytime. You can read It did what? Proof Positive Studies on the Science of Gratitude when you click here.

Listen to The Science of Gratitude

The Documentary: The Science of Gratitude

Produced by BMPaudio and the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley and UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, this documentary, The Science of Gratitude, focuses on the power (or lack of) of being thankful. Hosted by Susan Sarandon, it illustrates how gratitude makes a difference in our lives. It examines gratitude in the workplace, in relationships, in health, in child-rearing, and more through research, expert opinion, and through story.
