Personal health definition
Health is a reality that has always worried human beings and has shaped the way we see and think of our existence and our environment. It’s a concept that has been changing throughout the historical evolution of mankind, and one that can never lose its importance and significance. Health is something natural to every being in its physical, mental or spiritual dimension; it frames our very sphere of being and existing in the world. Having or not having health is what determines our power to better adjust to existence.
Today, health is no longer considered to be solely based on the absence of illness. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines it as the complete state of physical, mental and Social well-being, and not only the absence of infections or disease. However, this definition makes no reference to an individual’s lifestyle. We must remember and point out that an individual’s health also depends on the lifestyle he/she leads.
It’s very important to have adequate nutrition and weight as well as hygiene habits, physical activity, etc. Many people prefer to live comfortably and without any physical efforts, causing the body to eventually deteriorate. Like physical effort, our mental state is an integral part of our health. Mental health refers to the state of a person's psyche and emotional balance. It includes the recognition and use of abilities to lead lives in a productive and harmonious way. From the clinical point of view, it’s the absence of mental disorders. Along these lines there is also the so-called spiritual health which is based on the belief in a higher power, a supreme being or God that gives peace, conformity and security to life.
If the health of people and populations is a reality that worries everyone in general, the disease, as a negative correlation of this and as a personal anthropological experience, is also a concept of interest, since it affects everyone and can influence, positively or negatively, the way of thinking about humans as beings subject to fragility. Moreover, health and disease affect human being as essential structures that can’t exist without the other, the human being is healthy or sick, according to their different levels of expression. Health and disease are expressions of something to which there is a certain natural disposition. On the other hand, and despite marketization, medical and technological advances of industrialized and developed societies have been, to a large extent, responsible for the decrease in mortality due to chronic or terminal illnesses and the increase in life expectancy, changing the perception and significance of the concept of health throughout the history of mankind.
Finally, collective health aims to foster the relationship between biological and social processes versus health. These processes try to incorporate the conceptual and social dimensions of individuals, to achieve the practice of integral attention towards each. Health as a social product is a peculiar trait of the human beings, in which we see our conditions as individuals and its relationship with other groups, organizations and social institutions that offer the possibility of integrating themselves into their physical environment in order to take care of their health. Social indicators are a determining ingredient, to understand their impact on the health and quality of life of individuals and population.
