Six Realistic Things I’m Doing To Stay Sane During Quarantine

Y’all, I had an entire list of things I planned to do towards the beginning of the Pandemic to keep a regular routine. It included attending all of the cool virtual events I could as well as getting dolled up and dressed every day. That was in April, when I naively thought this all was going to be wrapped up by summer.

We’re six months in now. I put on sweatpants and call it a day as I try to get work done. If my curls are popping in the morning, that’s a win. Virtual experiences (happy hours, virtual lunches, etc) have become annoying because, between work, side hustling, and watching Netflix, looking at screens all day can be draining. Minus some of the Verzuz battles on Instagram Live (I personally applaud Brandy and Monica for finally doing one!!!).

So this is my personal, new realistic list of things that I have found have kept me relatively sane in the midst of this pandemic. Hopefully, some of them help you!

Praying/Meditating

This may sound really cliche, but starting my day off with prayer and self-reflection again has been a game-changer for me. When I was in my office, I did that before things got busy. Once quarantine hit, I began to dive right into work, frazzled and stressed about everything on my plate. I wouldn’t even eat or anything without gazing at my phone or looking at to-do lists.

Now, I try to start off the day again with a good breakfast and devotion with God, reflecting on my blessings and praying over the day and weeks ahead (among so many other things). It allows me to go into the day with a stronger mindset to tackle what’s ahead.

Dance Parties In My Living Room

Working remotely from my living room can be so dull and my legs fall asleep! So I get up at Random, put my headphones in, and Dance around my living room to my favorite songs at random times of the day. That good energy puts me in an easygoing and productive mood for the day.

I’ve even gone as far as to make #DancePartyWednesday a thing on my Instagram. Every Wednesday, my followers get a random song and dance from me, just because. Just trying to get over that mid-week hump, you know?

I dance to the most RANDOM songs on my iPhone lol If you don’t know this one, you’re too young for me, bruh! Bonus points if you remember the steps. #meninblack #willsmith #dancepartywednesday . . . Going To Bed Earlier

My sleep pattern has been completely thrown off for MONTHS behind looking at some type of device most of my day. Going to bed at 3 or 4 am and having to “report” to work at 8:30 am, even if my desk is right in my living room, was NOT working. I can’t pull all-nighters and bounce back quick like I did in my early 20s. I need sleep to function now!

Now, I force myself to go to bed at a decent time, whether I’m tired or not. And, you know what? My energy levels have been much better!

Seeing My Family

Yes, I go to see my immediate family, while still avoiding close contact in this pandemic. But I live completely alone and not having ANY real, in-person human interaction took its toll. Even for the girl who high-key loves having her own space. It’s incredibly isolating not to see faces in person and that can be hard for anyone.

So, every few weeks, I go over to my parents’ house, whether it’s to celebrate a special event or just to pick up a package I had delivered there. I try to keep my distance, share some laughs, eat some food, and then I go back to my peace and solitude. I didn’t know how bad I needed that until I went weeks on end without seeing ANYBODY. Don’t judge me.

Walking Outside/Home Workouts

My weight loss journey is filled with its ups and downs but I’ve been doing pretty well recently. I attribute this to walking outside again and committing to home workouts (because I REFUSE to go to the gym right now). Nutrition is key in all of this, but workouts have been a huge stress reliever and keep me moving. I feel better after a great sweat.

Walking outside instead of being inside most of the time has been peaceful and gives me moments to reflect on my life. Letting the sun hit my skin also feels great, too.

Getting Back Into Hobbies

Hobbies! Remember those? The things you did just for FUN. I love creating things that most people will never see (writing poetry, adult coloring, recording/editing videos, crocheting blankets from time to time, etc.).

My hobbies have fallen by the wayside for the love of the almighty coin and “branding.” I miss creating just for the sake of creating, so I started that back up. I journal more. I’m reading fiction books again. I’m doing things that I want to do, not for money or for brand awareness. Just for ME. And I’ve never felt better.
