Not only is sex enjoyable but it has incredible benefits that can keep us healthier; a lower heart attack risk, boosting our immunity, improving women’s bladder control, and better sleep patterns just to name a few. Sometimes though, our libidos need a little boost to keep us from falling asleep the moment we hit the sheets.
Instead of rushing off to the doctor to ask about prescriptions, you might want to check out your local grocery store first. It turns out; many foods are a natural way to wake up your sex drive.
“There’s a growing body of evidence that some of the vitamins and components in foods can enhance sexual function and sexual experience,” says Jennifer R. Berman, MD, the director of the Berman Women’s Wellness Center, in Beverly Hills, California.
If you’re hoping to put the spark back into your sex life, then you might want to try some of these foods that can help get you and your partner in the mood.
Not only are they delicious to snack on but almonds are said to act as a Sexual stimulant, increase passion and boost fertility. This nutrient-dense food has several trace minerals that are crucial for our Sexual Health and reproduction. Almonds contain zinc, selenium, and vitamin E which are all critical to our sexual health. “Zinc helps enhance libido and sexual desire,” says Dr. Berman. “We don’t really understand the mechanisms behind it, but we know it works.”
Here’s an odd fact: It turns out that that the name avocado comes from the Aztec word āhuacatl, which means “testicle.” The reason that avocados are considered an aphrodisiac is that they are low in saturated fat but rich in unsaturated fats which makes them great for your arteries and heart. Anything that keeps your heart healthy will keep your blood flow going to all your sweet spots. Men are twice as likely to have issues with erectile dysfunction if they have underlying heart disease.
Research has revealed that the trace minerals and antioxidants that leafy greens provide us with are important for sexual health because they can help block some of the environmental contaminants that are thought to affect our sex drive negatively. No wonder Arugula has been used since the first century as an aphrodisiac. This means it’s stood the test of time and if it was good for our ancestors, it’s good for us, as well.
Asparagus is rich in folate, which is a B vitamin that helps increase the production of histamine. Having optimum levels of histamine is essential for a healthy sex drive in men and women. It’s also a good source of vitamin E which is involved in the production of our sex hormones.
All citrus fruits are super-rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and folic acid; all of which are crucial for men’s sexual health. However, the antioxidants in Vitamin C have a short lifespan once they enter the body, so men need to make sure to eat them often to take advantage of the benefits.
While these fruits might have a funny shape, they have an excellent history of being considered an aphrodisiac because they have a right amount of both soluble and insoluble fiber which can improve your heart’s health. Also, foods that are high in fiber help keep you feeling full longer and helps us to maintain a healthy weight.
Oysters might be slippery and slimy, but they are one of the most well-known aphrodisiac foods. Also, they’re one of the best sources of zinc which can boost your libido. Many other types of seafood are also aphrodisiacs. Oily fish like herring and wild salmon give us omega-3s, which are crucial for healthy hearts.
Strawberries are a passionate shade of red, which people find sexually stimulating. The results of a couple of different studies have shown that men find women sexier if they’re wearing red, than if they were wearing cool colors like green or blue. One study found that men tipped more money to the waitresses wearing red than they did to the other waitresses who were wearing white. Strawberries are also a good source of folic acid, which is a B vitamin that can prevent congenital disabilities and according to a University of California, Berkeley study, could be related to higher sperm counts in men. Dark-chocolate-dipped strawberries will be a perfect Valentine’s day treat because chocolate is full of methylxanthines which also give our libidos a boost.
So, don’t forget to grab some of these sexy foods next time you’re at the grocery store. Also, don’t remember to let us know if you have ever tried and had any luck with these aphrodisiacs in the comments below.
