OKUMA
Kindness to a dirty dog.

A gentleman who was going to see a friend, met at the gate a dog all covered with mud. The dog ran to him, barking with joy.

Thinking that it belonged to his friend, he let the dog follow himself into the house. The dog rolled on the carpet in the drawing-room.

When the gentleman of the house came in, he seemed very much annoyed, but he said nothing.

When they sat down to eat, the dog jumped on a chair, put two dirty paws on the tablecloth, and began to bark.

“Are you very fond of dogs?” asked the host.

“Oh! no, I hate them,” replied the visitor.

“But you are so kind to that dog,” said the host.

“I have only let him in because it belongs to you,” said the other.

“To me!” said the host; “I thought it was yours, otherwise I should have put it out long ago.”

At this the two roared with laughter, and the dog was quickly put out of the house.
