Rainer Maria Rilke (full name René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke) was born on the 4th December 1875 in Prague, Bohemia, at the time part of the Austrian Empire. He was a  poet and novelist who wrote in German and also French and whose literature has been translated into several languages.
