This evening, January 5th, as every year, the Befana is going to arrive! An old ugly lady, yet gentle-hearted, who brings sweets and toys to all the children....
Il nome Befana è il corrispettivo popolare di Epifania (parola di origine greca che significa “apparizione, rivelazione”) che cade il 6 gennaio,l'ultimo giorno delle feste natalizie: si dice infatti, in rima, che “l'Epifania tutte le feste le porta via”
The name Befana is the popular word for Epiphany (from the ancient Greek meaning apparition, revelation), a feast falling on January 6th, the last holiday of Christmas time: a rhyme says in fact that Epiphany takes all feasts away.
Secondo la tradizione religiosa, nella notte tra il 5 e il 6 gennaio i tre Re Magi vennero dall'oriente a far visita a Gesù Bambino e ad offrirgli i loro doni : oro, incenso e mirra.
According to religious tradition, in the night between January 5 and 6, the three kings came from the East to visit Baby Jesus and bring him their gifts: gold, incense and myrrh.
Ma come è nata la tradizione della Befana, proprio in coincidenza con la venuta dei Re Magi? Una leggenda racconta che i Re Magi si fermarono a casa della vecchietta per chiederle la strada per Betlemme, e lei gliela indicò, ma, nonostante la invitassero a unirsi a loro, preferì restare in casa a fare le sue faccende. Ma poi, ripensandoci, decise di mettersi in viaggio sulla sua scopa cercando di raggiungere i Re Magi: ma non vi riusciva e allora andava da una casa all'altra e lasciava un dono ad ogni bambino, sperando che fosse Gesù.
But how was the tradition of the Befana initiated, in coincidence with the coming of the kings? A legend tells that the Magi stopped at the house of the old woman to ask for the way to Bethlehem, and she showed it to them, but on their invitation to join them, she preferred to stay at home doing her housework. But later she changed her mind and decided to go on her broom trying to reach the kings and on her roaming she knocked on every door leaving a gift to every child in the hope he was Baby Jesus.
E così da tempo immemorabile, ogni anno si rimette in viaggio e si presenta per far felici i bambini. È anche tradizionalmente un giro di questua, in cui si chiede qualcosa, che può essere un'offerta in natura o in denaro.
And so from time immemorial, every year she journeys the land to make children happy. It is also a traditional begging call, people making the Befana's train asking for food or money as an offer.
