Later it became known as operation ‘yahoo’ but it started on 5th April 1982 when Koevoet team Zulu Golf left Elundu base and the bases curses behind in the early morning and headed NE on patrol.
Near the Angolan border they discovered the spoor of about 100 of SWAPO PLAN’s Typhoon force. Typhoon were a Swapo Plan special force that specialized in deep south infiltration’s, their commander was Danger Ashipala who had earlier captured Sapper Van der Mescht and executed Johan Caparus Ferreira when Johan was battling to keep up by executing him with AK 47’s, shooting him from head to toe on automatic and stabbing him with bayonets 42 times. Typhoon had been trained by east Germans in Angola.
This time Typhoon’s objective was to reach the farming area around the Tsumeb Otavi area where they would carry out murder and mayhem and as many acts of terror as they could but they had one problem; Koevoet team ZG (later joined by three other ops K teams) were right behind them, were gaining on them and were hell bent on killing and destroying them.
‘Maintain radio silence, I must make a forced landing….’Major Tickly Kessler went down into a mahangu field he was killed on impact and Koevoet Sgt Klassen who had been wounded by an Enemy Rpg during a SWAPO PLAN ambush a week earlier was with Kessler, died nine days later.
One pair of gunships went to try to assist Kessler while the other pair had gone to refuel at Eenhanna.
Then suddenly, ‘Contact, contact, contact!’
Stiripo with keen eyesight was first to see them, he rose up in the gunners seat to cock the LMG while Lt Goosen driving lead Casspir ZG 1 looked to his left at Stiripo. The enemy RPG 7 hit the side of the Casspir and detonated with an ear deafening bang a few centimeters from Lt Goosens head, the white hot molten metal slug sliced through the Casspir like a bullet through a paper bag striking Goosen on the right side of his head in front of his temple blowing away a piece of his skull and melting his skin and hair. Shrapnel sprayed inside the Casspir hungry for human flesh. The slug passed through Stiripo’s head sending him to meet his great Tate Kalunga, all in a fraction of a second.
To counter the enemy fire 12 Koevoet Casspirs surged forward, 120 Koevoet members opened fire, every assault rifle and machine gun on automatic. Ten thousand rounds of 7,62 mm ammo erupted in every direction.
Some of the insurgents began to flee, no match for the Koevoet firepower. The Casspirs raced, the enemy were shot over and over while the Casspiirs drove over them, mangled and mashed them.
The first contact of Operation Yahoo was all over in a few minutes.
