It is understood that some of this information includes online chatter within the Chinese community that suggests the victim may be an overseas student who was reported missing at the weekend.

The student in question was said to have been last seen at Myer department store “in the city” last Friday although it is unclear whether the reference is to the retail giant’s Sydney store or another outlet.

In a statement to news.com.au, Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Gary Jubelin said: “As the woman has yet to be formally identified, police are not in a position to comment further” and urged anyone with information to come forward.
