ASUU Speaks Against The Scrapping of Post UTME
On Wednesday, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, the National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU said that the quality of tertiary education would be improved if the universities are allowed to regulate their admission process.
Prof. Ogunyemi said this in Lagos while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, “the quality of our tertiary education would be improved if these tertiary institutions are allowed to admit student into their Institution in their own terms.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reported that the there have been a meeting held with the Minister of Education to decide the cut off mark for all tertiary institution and also to announce the scrapping out of Post UME.
Post UME is usually the second examination provided by the institution to screen students who would be admitted into the institution but the Minister of Education has announced that any institution caught conduction any examination under the guise to admit students would be sanctioned.
He added that any institution that has already collected money for such purpose should return it or else they would be sanctioned.
Minister Adamu Adamu said if any institution has already conducted any of such screening examination there are hereby annulled.
Professor Biodun Ogunyemi said to News Agency of Nigeria that such directives from the Ministry of Education is wrong and it encroaches the autonomy of the institution.
He said, “the government should give these institutions the liberty to regulate themselves and to decide the process they choose to admit student into their institution.
