After Nice attack, Jo Cox's husband issues heartfelt appeal on day of her funeral

The husband of Jo Cox, the Labour MP who was fatally shot and stabbed outside her constituency surgery in Yorkshire, has issued a Heartfelt Appeal on the day of her funeral in the aftermath of the truck attack in Nice in which at least 84 people were killed.

In a tweet, Brendan Cox said: “Jo would ask us not to Fight Hate with hate but draw together to drain the swamp that Extremism Breeds in. Thinking of all victims of hatred today.”

Cox’s Family asked that the funeral service for the Batley and Spen MP will be a private occasion for family and friends only.

“We have been overwhelmed and touched by the love and support people have shown us since Jo’s death. We are deeply grateful to all who have reached out to us,” the family said.

“Knowing that so many people share both our grief and our determination to take forward Jo’s legacy is a source of great strength at what otherwise feels like a very bleak time.”

“Now, particularly for the children, we have decided that Jo’s funeral will be a very small and private family affair. Anybody from the local community who would like to pay their respects is welcome to gather along the areas outlined as we make this last journey. Following this we would ask everyone to respect our privacy to enable us to grieve and rebuild as a family.”

Jo Cox was killed on June 16 after she was attacked outside the library in Birstall, West Yorkshire, where she held a constituency surgery.

A spokesperson for the interior ministry confirmed that at least 84 people had been killed in Nice after the truck ploughed 2 km (1.3 miles) through the crowd celebrating Bastille Day.

Among the killed are several children. The driver of the truck, whose identity is still unknown, was shot dead by police.

A police source told Reuters that the attacker was a 31-year-old Franco-Tunisian known to police for petty crime.

French President Francois Hollande said the country’s state of emergency would be extended for another three months.
