As escape vehicles go, you can’t get much worse than a go-kart.
Nevertheless, one intrepid rider was caught on camera cruising down Interstate 880 in Oakland on Sunday, pedal to the 50cc metal.
He was rolling with company, having attracted the attention of an SUV with flashing lights on the busy stretch of road. The chase was duly caught on camera by onlookers and posted to Snapchat and Twitter by Tonka Dre.
Here’s the view from the side of the freeway, where the mystery driver looks like he’s been hit by a Mario Kart lightning bolt.
Dre reckons the guy was part of a group of riders and caught a tail because he couldn’t keep up with his crew.
“Local guys have an annual go-kart and dirt bike ride throughout Oakland and sometimes jump on the freeway,” he tweeted. “This particular person on the go-kart was the slowest and the last in the pack. That’s why he was being chased by police.”
No police departments are owning up to being the pursuers, according to the LA Times.
Spokespeople for the California Highway Patrol, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Department and the Oakland PD all denied the SUV was one of theirs, the paper reports.
The go-kart guy may still be rolling free.
