Benton ‘mercy rules’ Parkview, gears up for El Dorado

BentonCowbellThe Benton Panthers got one step closer to the Class 6A high school football championship game on Friday night by beating Parkview 49-28.

Since Benton was undefeated this season and won the 6A South, the Panthers drew a bye during the first round of the playoffs last week. The team easily handled Parkview tonight, having pulled ahead by 35 points in the third quarter. When a team is ahead by 35 points in the second half, the sportsmanship Rule (a.k.a. the mercy rule) kicks in meaning that the clock runs without stopping until the end of the game.

Parkview scored a couple of touchdowns to pull within 21 points of the lead, but those 14 points came after Benton pulled most of its starters and were letting some younger kids get some playing experience.

Benton will play El Dorado at 7 p.m. at home on Nov. 28 in the third round of the 6A playoffs. The Panthers faced El Dorado at home on Oct. 31 and won 29-17.

Should Benton win that game, the team will face the winner of the Pine Bluff/Jonesboro game for the state championship on December 5th.

So, go Panthers and remember to bring that cowbell to the El Dorado game and keep that rascal rattling.
