Should I mourn a little longer?

Akhil Katyal

Should I Mourn a little longer

how he nursed a broken dream

how much he nursed a broken dream

should I touch his night with words

should my lament be stronger

how those who craved autumn’s last night were exiled by the spring

how those in spring’s light arms were auctioned off as autumn’s claim

should I say his name should I say each of their names

would you care to note them down should your ink be darker your hand, stronger

should I mourn a little longer

the shrouds are again leaving my part of the town

my town has again erupted in flames

you will have to listen to the screams of my people

you will have to listen to their names you will have to keep count

the minister’s recommendations lie soaked in blood

stillborn on the pages of the Constitution

should I just close the file junk the folder

should I ask the Harijans to carry it on their shoulder

as you stand, mute should I ask the Bahujans to lend their hand

your silence has always been a warmonger

should I mourn a little longer.

— Translated by Akhil Katyal from Dhiren Borisa’s Hindi poem ‘Ab Maatam Aur Manaaun Kya’
