Central Water Commission official Sadikul Haque said water in parts o Brahmaputra river has crossed the danger level by 16 cms and to rise further. In previous rainy seasons, the water level used to flow 2 cms above the mark.
Brahmaputra river in the Assam region is flowing above the danger mark causing flood and submerging 70 percent of the Kaziranga National Park in water.
Heavy rains for the past several days have caused damaged to properties and infrastructure. At least six people have been reported dead.
Forest officers have been deployed and alerted considering the gravity of the situation in Kaziranga National Park that houses the world’s largest population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses apart from elephants and tigers.
According to the officials, the animals of Kaziranga National Park had been taken to the highlands and forest department is completely on alert on the National Highway to avoid any poaching chances.
Meanwhile, rescue operations have been conducted in the region to evacuate 150 villagers stranded in Balipur Char of Baksa district and shift them to flood relief shelters.
A resident said, “Every year, we lose a lot of things during the food and we have been facing this issue for a long time. Till now, the government hasn’t done any measures to solve the issue.”
