Chennai cop shot dead with his own gun during raid in Rajasthan

Inspector Periyapandi and his team were trying to nab suspects of the Kolathur burglary which took place in Chennai last month.

A Chennai Police inspector was shot dead – with his own service revolver – in the wee hours of Wednesday in Rajasthan, while a special team of Law and Order officials was trying to nab suspects in the Kolathur burglary which took place in Chennai last month.

The deceased – identified as Inspector Periyapandi of Chennai’s Maduravoyal police station – along with his team, was chasing Nathuram from Pali district in Rajasthan and his associate Choudhary from Jodhpur. Allegedly, the suspects had drilled hole on the ceiling of a pawn shop in Kolathur and looted 3.5 kilograms gold, 4.5 kg silver and Rs 2 lakh in cash on November 16.

Following a tip off on the location of where the suspects were hiding, a special eight-member team of Chennai police went to Rajasthan and on Wednesday visited a godown in Rampura Kalan village within Jaithran police station limits in Pali district.

Stating that one of the accused snatched the inspector’s service revolver and shot him from a close range, City Police Commissioner, AK Vishwanathan said, “At around 2.30 am, the police team nabbed main accused [sic] Nathuram and Devaram. The persons who were living with him in the premises opposed the team from arresting (the suspects) and a scuffle ensued between both sides. Physical blows (were) exchanged between them. One of accused beat and Munisekar fell down. In the melee, one of the accused snatched the pistol from him and opened fire on Periyapandi’s chest at a close range.”

“We got in touch with Rajasthan ADGP NRK Reddy, who assured all assistance to nab the suspects,” he added.

Two days back, the special team – of which Periyapandi was a part of – nabbed four suspects – Chennaram, father of the key suspect and his relatives Ellaram, Shankar Lal and Dauram – from Rajasthan. Later the police went on a manhunt for Nathuram and his associate Deinesh Chowdary – who hails from Jodhpur.

With the investigation in the case still on, a police official said that on the day of the robbery “the duo had approached Mukesh on the pretext of renting his shop to start a textile store and had also paid an advance amount. After noting the whereabouts of the owners, they decided to break into the shop during lunch and escape with the money.”
