In a rare surgical achievement, a doctor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) managed to safely take out an ice pick that had gone through a man’s back and pierced his Lung.
The victim, Rakesh, had been stabbed through the back with the ice pick which went all the way to lung.
Usually, a surgery in such cases involves making a long incision to take out an object from the body, but Dr Biplab Mishra decided to perform the surgery key hole surgery using VATS (video assisted technology).
Such cases also require an expert in anaesthesia. Dr Gyanendra, who administered the anaesthetic, said one of the lung was put under anaesthesia so that the patient could keep breathing.
Dr Mishra said if an object pierces the body, people should not try to take it out since only trained doctors can handle such cases. Pulling out the object can lead to profuse bleeding, leading to death.
AIIMS Trauma Centre chief Dr Rajiv Malhotra said it is the endeavour of the institute to provide world-class medical facility to people.
