The Matrix Resurrections (2021)

They should've just gone with The Catrix. They shoulda.

I admit the bots were a nice touch of horror. And the special effects look good. The sceneries too. It's nice to see John Wick without the hair for a while - it almost feels like the world where he doesn't have it is the wrong one at this point - and the way they played within the franchise within the world, an inception of the Matrix, that was cool. That was new. But when it's all said and done it's not new after all. It's the same thing all over, only now they're a duo, and they've been brought back from the dead, and Zion is Io, and even if the actor-credit music sounds like a knock-off of an iconic song.

Feels like they're just grabbing for straws here. Trying in every way possible to re-use elements of the Previous movies that somehow weren't exploited earlier, but the fight choreography feels slow, the slow-mo moments feel cliché, the character interactions though good just lack the depth or pompousness of the previous... it feels superficial. It feels like someone else is directing. It feels like a comedy. It feels like it's more about a female lead than about life, and love, and all that which really matters. I don't feel the emotion even in the more emotional moments. I don't feel the bonds. I feel a familiarity, though. And occasionally a 'this is pretty cool'.

Trying to recapture the magic of a movie as iconic as the first Matrix with something like this... I'm not sure it feels wrong, I still appreciate the attempt, but I do feel like they didn't quite make it. Didn't manage all the way. Didn't recapture that magic, more so showed exactly what's wrong with the world we live in today, and gave us no solution for it, just younger faces to match the ages, sun and rainbows, shadow spaces.

It feels shallow. It feels shameful. It feels complacent.

But still is pretty cool...

rated 3.5/5: not bad at all
