Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017)

Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017)

The latest Smurfs movie was a work of art. Beautiful. It's still all about Smurfette, and Clumsy is back to being a big part of the story, as well as Brainy, and Muscles... is new right? Or was he in the first movie too? Or was it the second?

Anyway: it's a new start, and it felt like this was the perfect reinterpretation of the original in the previous trilogy (though they cancelled the third one and made this instead).

The music's back to being moderately poppy, some of the scenes remind a lot of Trolls (all the plant ones), and the biggest difference of all: it's all animated now!

Part of me misses the real/animated contrasts, but another part of me applauds the change, because it does feel a lot more authentic now. It's all in the same frame. No green screens. No special effects... even if I miss those special effects. It all flows together in unison with the whole world animated though, and it tells the tale of Smurfette in it's completeness. It's all about her, and her purpose.

The focus is clear and the red thread is strong. It's all about venturing into the forbidden forest and finding a whole new village of Smurfs, that are both different and so much like the current group we know and love... but that's a little spin-off thing. In the end Smurfette does find herself too, and provides just the right kind of crises to give the story the conclusion it so deserves.

I really appreciate how they go full circle with all elements of the plot, too, from the swamp, to the selfie, to the table eater. It all comes back together again for that final scene. Here's a Smurf movie well done! Familiar, but without loose ends. The best possible way.

In the memory of Janine "Nine" Culliford, wife of Peyo, and original painter of the Smurfs who chose their beautiful blue.
