The first Google AdWords ad – how to start?

When you start your business or blog you probably wonder how to promote your website and content. On our blog you’ll find some interesting tips: how to promote your blog offline or 7 easy ways to promote your blog (infographic). When you start you often have a limited budget, so spend your money wisely. Start with making an action strategy and weigh up the pros and cons of each solution.  It’s also worth considering website positioning. However if you start business in which there are many competitors, website positioning can be problematic (and surely it’ll last longer).

Website positioning can take a lot of time, so we can support it with some additional actions.  We can use Google Adwords. It’s Google’s advertising system and ads are here displayed above organic searches. Unfortunately, also in this case, it’s a kind of ‘exchange’, that is why you define the amount of money you want to spend on every ‘click’. If your bid is high, your website will be probably displayed on the first page of Google.  Thanks to that you increase your chances of clicking in your link.

Why to advertise in Google AdWords?

The first reason is possibility of target group configuration, to which your ad will be directed.  You can choose specific phrases, target group, location, exclusive words and many other possibilities, thanks to which you get with your ads to your visitors. Additionally you can choose different campaign type, for example: search network (the most popular), display network, shopping, video and universal app.

Google takes care about its users, so as their searches were the most suitable, that is why we must provide best quality content.  However before we start our campaign, we should be sure that our website is responsive and contains a good quality content.

Google AdWords – how to start?

  1. Create a Google AdWords account (if you already have for example a gmail account, it’ll be easy and quick). The full instruction you will find here. However remember also that it’s no need to take all Google’s tips into consideration. It’s of course in Google’s  interest to convince you to spend much money on the ad while for you the most important is the highest conversion for the least amount of money.
  2. When you’ve already created your account, choose campaign type and its goal. Then you can set your location, languages, bids and budget.  You can also use some extensions and add for example: links to subpages, explanations and phone number. There is also here a possibility of additional settings such as: ad rotation, precise ad schedule, location option and so on.
  3. In next step you can configure ad group.  It’s the best to add some of them – in one ad group you write keywords connected with one product or service. There are also here different match types, which help to control ad displaying. It looks like that:
    1. keyword = broad match
    2. “keyword” = phrase match
    3. [keyword] = exact match
  4. Then we create ads. Remember not to create only one ad, but different ones and track which ads are the most effective.

Before you start

Specify your goals

You must know what you want to achieve by using ads. For some people it will be entries to a page, for others store’s conversion and for any others contacts or subscription to a newsletter. Specify your goal and time you want to achieve it. If you don’t achieve it – draw conclusions and if it’s necessary change the way you act.

Don’t spend too much money

Beginnings are always hard and it’s similar in the case of Google Adwords. You will make mistakes especially in the beginning of your campaign, that is why don’t spend too much money on your campaign. Start with small amount of money and learn. Small amounts of money won’r ruin your budget, and at the same time they are “big” enough to let you get basic knowledge about Google AdWords.

Be patient

Don’t expect spectacular results at the very beginning. You must be patient. Supervise your campaign every day – check what’s happening and if it’s necessary edit it. You can also add exclusive words on a regular basis.

Start with simple solutions

Don’t make everything complicated at the very beginning. Use the easiest solutions and draw some conclusions from them. You will know more advanced options and additional possibilities with time.
