SYSDOWN Ransomware is an in-development project which appears to belong to an anonymous forum member who has released a sample copy of Sysdown Ransomware for testing purposes. According to the author, this threat is not meant to be distributed, nor do they plan on using it for malicious purposes. However, regardless of this we can’t overlook the fact that SYSDOWN Ransomware has a working file-encryption technique, and running it on an unprotected computer is guaranteed to cause a significant amount of long-lasting damage to the victim’s data.
Since this is a test project, it is not a surprise that the visible consequences of its attack are minimum. All locked files will have either the ‘.SysDown’ or ‘.SysDown.SysDown’ extensions applied to their name, and the threat will automatically display a new window which simply says ‘Pwned by the SYSDOWN virus!’.
While it is good news that SYSDOWN Ransomware is not meant to reach innocent users, there’s a slight chance that malicious users might somehow get their hands on the threat’s source code and create a fully weaponized version of it. Even if this does not happen, you still need to ensure that your PC and the data on it are sufficiently protected from ransomware attacks. The two main things you need to do In order to ensure your data’s safety is to use a credible and up-to-date anti-malware software suite, as well as to regularly create backup copies of your important files. The latter technique is the most efficient way to tackle ransomware attacks, since it gives you the chance to fully recover your files without paying a single cent to the perpetrator.
