Todd Ashton, Head of Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh,said, the early phases of 5G rollout in Malaysia is expected in the area of enhancement of network capacity, speed and quality in metropolitan areas. Usage will grow over time when innovations such as IOI creep in the area of healthcare, manufacturing, automotive and energy/utilities.

Insights:

5G subscription growth in some markets has slowed as a result of the pandemic, nonetheless, COVID-19 has highlighted the true value of connectivity and the role it can play in restarting economies.
Since COVID-19, fixed residential networks has experienced a 20-100 percent growth.
In a recent study conducted by Ericsson Consumer Lab, 83 percent of the respondents from 11 countries claim that ICT helped them a lot to cope with the lockdown.
57 percent say they will save money for financial security, one-third plan to invest in 5G and an improved broadband at home to be better prepared for a potential second wave of COVID-19.
Ericsson now has more than 93 commercial 5G agreements or contracts with unique communication service providers, of which 40 are live networks.

Before COVID-19, 5G was amongst top tech trends; since COVID-19, 5G projects slowed down due to lockdown and other restrictions on work.
One immediate use case of 5G would be the enhancement of Internet connectivity of rural areas where fixed networks couldn't reached.
