Supporting independent media in an age of misinformation

James Deane, director of policy and research at the BBC’s international development charity, BBC Media Action, argues that philanthropic efforts to support an independent media needs greater cohesion.

‘Something decisive changed in 2016 in independent media support. It wasn’t a recognition that philanthropy is important to sustaining independent media… What changed was the sudden recognition of just how much independent media mattered and just how weakened democracies had become by misinformation and disinformation.’

Deane considers, ‘Communication and lesson learning between foundations has greatly improved in recent years, but the complexity and scale of the challenge require better communication, evidential foundations and strategic clarity.’ Continue reading
