So you’ve started a web design agency. Great! But you’re having trouble getting customers online? You probably thought you wouldn’t have trouble Finding Customers since web design seems to be a fairly prosperous field. Well, that may be true, but how much effort have you put in to finding customers? Are you putting in effort but not seeing much return? If so, then you may need to take another look at what you’re doing and see if you can do anything better. Or it be that you may need to try something else. If you haven’t yet, you can try one of these ideas to get more customers.
Start with people you know. Word of mouth is a great tool, after all. Get family, friends and acquaintances to recommend you to people. When you’ve run out of people around you, start asking friends online. Social media is a great way to network and build referrals. Ask people you know on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social media sites to refer you to people they know. Offer some selling points if you need to, such as: local; competitive pricing; use cutting edge technology; quick turnaround; have a niche cut out; recommendations from high-profile clients.
2. Anchor client
Do you have a “big name” client you can use as an Anchor client? Just like people won’t go shopping without a big name anchor store to draw them to the smaller stores, you can use an anchor client to get smaller clients. Don’t be afraid to do what it takes to get an anchor client. Working for them for free or at a reduced rate will be worth it in the end when you start getting other clients who think “This person worked for that company? They must do good work!”
Put your clients to work for you. Let them be your cheerleader. Ask them to refer you to others. Or even get them to leave you testimonials you can use on your web site or in your portfolio. People will be more inclined to use you if they see the good words other people have to say about you and your work.
4. Package deals and products
Everyone likes a good deal, but if you offer services on your site without a fixed price, people will tend to think it’s beyond their price range. Try offering some of your services as a package deal, or as packaged products at a fixed price instead, like logo design, website assessment, pamphlets, WordPress templates, or downloadable PDF’s. Or you can try offering products for sale, like software, packages of DIY fonts, icons and layers, and eBooks. This can introduce them to your work at a fixed price.
Try specialising in doing work for a particular niche. If you were looking for a designer, would you want one who does work for a range of clients, or one who specialises in design for your area? For example, if you ran a real estate business and were looking for a web designer, wouldn’t one who specialised in real estate jump to the top of the list?
If you’re not blogging right now, start! A great way to build trust and grow your client base is to have a blog where you can share content to educate people on what you do. Many people search the web to find answers to problems, so if you can offer answers in the form of educational articles and tutorials, you can place yourself as an expert to them and gain their trust – and possibly a client. Many web designers have a blog or record educational videos. You can share information as a blog, or even as an eBook or submit articles to article websites to increase your SEO.
