We’ve all heard the saying about making your work or job something you enjoy doing. How great would it be to be able to turn your Hobby into a successful business? We’ve all heard about those internet success stories where people have made tons of money by turning their hobby into an online Business. It would be so nice to be able to do that, wouldn’t it? But is there really a way to turn your hobby into a successful business?
The first thing to consider is, should you turn your hobby into a business? Ask yourself these questions: Will you enjoy doing that hobby once it becomes a business? Will you enjoy doing it against deadlines? Will you enjoy doing it if it means not having a roof over your head if you don’t? Are you really committed to the hobby? Is it your true passion? Do you enjoy a challenge? Starting a business isn’t easy, after all. And will you be able to “sell” yourself and your creations?
If you really feel you can make a business out of your hobby, then here are a few tips to get you started.
1. Find out if there’s a market
Figure out if there is a market for your item first before betting the farm on a business. There are also a variety of ways to make a business from your hobby if you’re not sure yet how you want to go about it: teach others to do what you love doing; sell, import, invent, or craft a product or accessory for enthusiasts in your hobby; teach the business of the hobby; speak or write about the hobby; create a tour or performance series around the hobby; appraise, repair or fix items related to the hobby.
2. Research and plan
Research the industry, learning as much as you can about it and all the niches and the players. Evaluate, making sure it really is a good idea. Then make a business plan, detailing each step along the way and what you will need, and have a team of professionals (lawyer/solicitor, accountant, etc.) with you to help you along. You can advertise for them on www.SuperTasker.com or www.PeoplePerHour.com.
You may want to start off as a small side-business at first, to test the waters and make sure you will have a viable business model before you go all-in as a full-time venture.
Network like it’s a new job. Reach out to everyone you can to help spread the word and grow your contact list – friends from college, business associates, etc. Spend some time on at least one social media site to gather insight about your target customer base. Also research sourcing vendors and suppliers to confirm your target market. Take advantage of any ways you can to reach people who can help spread the word about you to your target market.
5. Stand out
How are you going to stand out? You need to figure this out, as does any business. And it’s hard for small businesses to compete using price. You’ll need to clearly identify your niche customers and develop a signature product or service to entice them with. People will buy anything once. The trick is to get them to keep coming back for more.
