Many American investors and patriots have long wanted iPhones to be made entirely in the United States. Let’s not forget that currently most iPhone parts come from Chinese factories , while the company’s latest phones are being assembled in India by Taiwanese companies.

After seeing how the United States banned imports from ZTE and Huawei, it makes sense that Apple is already taking the first steps to make the dream of the iPhone “made in the USA” come true . According to Bloomberg reports, TSMC (the world’s largest semiconductor foundry) is going to produce 4nm processors for Macs, iPads, iPhones and other products at its $12 billion factory in Arizona.

Arizona Chip factory to come online in 2024

The Arizona plant where TSMC will make chips for iPhones (and other Apple devices) is currently under construction and is expected to come online sometime in 2024, meaning the next generation of iPhones and iPads will surely be lost . And, according to the source, TSMC originally planned to start manufacturing 5nm silicon at the factory, but the demand from some US companies for high-end chips made in their country seems to have changed things.

TSMC had said they would make 20,000 wafers a month at the Arizona facility, though production may increase from those original plans. Apple will occupy a third of the production approximately. Tim Cook, Apple’s highest-ranking CEO, has already told his employees that the company plans to source chips from the Arizona plant.

Of course, all this is not officially confirmed yet. The announcement should take place next Tuesday in Phoenix, where President Joe Biden and Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo are expected to meet along with Tim Cook (CEO of Apple), Lisa Su (CEO of AMD) and Jensen Huang (CEO of NVIDIA). Also, TSMC is expected to announce its roadmap for the next two years, which will include building another factory nearby for the production of 3-nanometer chips for even more advanced devices.
