Do you want to verify your Twitter account by paying? You will have to wait 90 days if you are new

Since Elon Musk bought Twitter, the platform has been more turbulent for a few weeks than many of the news coming from the World Cup in Qatar. Price hikes on Twitter Blue, back and forth account verification, identity theft and even mass resignations.

Today we add one more chapter to the drama of the last few weeks, although through “good news” among so many negative ones. From now on, buying verification of your account on Twitter will be more difficult , since the requirements have changed. What is the new subscription policy? Who does it affect?

90 day wait for new users, does this requirement help?

Trying to fix the mess generated a few days ago by account authentication through the Twitter Blue subscription, the platform is making some changes to its policies. We know this thanks to an update in the “About” section of Twitter Blue , in which we found a new requirement to subscribe to the service.

As of November 29 , when Twitter Blue is reactivated, newcomers to Twitter will not be able to sign up for the premium subscription. Any new account will have to wait 90 days to pay for Twitter Blue . Until now this was not the case, since any user could create an account and immediately subscribe. As a requirement that covers all of Twitter Blue, it also affects the acquisition of the verification mark.

This decision is intended to reduce the massive identity theft that took place days ago, as it makes it a little more difficult for scammers. We say “a little” because they can still do their thing after 90 days. In fact, the only thing it affects is the immediacy that scammers sometimes require to take advantage of a developing story.

Everything else will remain the same, or even worse. The reason? Those 90-day waits could lead to fraudsters shaping up fake accounts . Once the cold period passes and they can verify them, they could be more credible to deceive others.

Twitter’s checkmark democratization has been a pain in the ass

As you know, all the mess around Twitter account authentication has to do with Elon Musk wanting to democratize this feature . It seems like an idea right off the bat, but the truth is that it does not contribute anything beyond an ego boost.

Having your account verified only serves to “prove” that your profile is authentic . However, by the time anyone can get the check mark, this becomes a huge fallacy. Also, if anyone can verify your account, it stops being something attractive and exclusive , making even that ego boost go away.

Beyond that, the implementation of this “democratization” has been terrible. There’s no clear roadmap from Twitter , just an Elon Musk whim that needs to be enforced. As there is no way forward, what we have seen in recent days happens.

The company has tried to fix the problem by differentiating the checkmarks and even adding an extra label. However, doing this is more of the same, as you end up differentiating your users instead of equating them (which is Musk’s goal). Put another way: Twitter is going around in circles on a whim .
