Google pays Activision $360M not to compete with the Play Store

Why is there no Battle.net on mobile? Well, because Google pays so that this does not happen. It was surprising that a video game studio as important in the market as Activision did not have its own store on mobile phones (as it does on computers).

Well, Epic Games’ lawsuit against the Google and Apple app stores has just revealed another interesting fact about the monopoly that these companies have. It was leaked that those of the big G have paid 360 million dollars to Activision Blizzard so that it does not launch an app store.

Dictatorship in the app market: Google bribes Activision and Riot Games to save the Play Store

One of the 2020 court reports from the Epic Games, Fortnite developer, lawsuit against Google has just been leaked. It mentions that those from Mountain View paid Activision for three years so that it will abandon its plans to launch an application store. This with the aim of avoiding competition that the Play Store may have.

Likewise, the report also indicates that another of the companies that Google bribes so that it does not launch an app store is Riot Games . The Tencent-owned studio behind the development of League of Legends and Valorant also receives payments from the big G valued at $30 million .

According to the Epic Games lawsuit, these strategies that seek to eliminate all kinds of competition are part of a plan called “Project Hug” . In addition, the plaintiff points out that part of this money was paid in the form of ads on YouTube , advertising and cloud services offered by Google.

Finally, it should be noted that the names of other major video game studios such as Nintendo and Ubisoft are also mentioned in this leak. However, the latter have not revealed the details of their agreements with the big G. And you… What do you think of this unfair competition from Google?
