One thing that has been difficult for me to learn in life is that people don’t want details.
I think I have great reasons for going into detail. To me, details are what makes life interesting. So I share lots of details with my doctor, Boss and people who have relationships with me. The feedback I get is that I give too much detail.
This is clearly a challenge because I love to Communicate. I have to be disciplined in how I communicate. To me, sharing information is really key to being a helpful person. However not everyone sees it that way. Most people only want to solve the problem in front of their face not fix the issue permanently.
I can understand why people prefer short term thinking but it is so silly to me. Why waste the Effort when you have to do it over and over again? That is far more time and effort. To me, being intelligent means that you don’t waste your time and effort.
So how do you live in a world that doesn’t want details? I guess you just keep what you know inside until someone asks. Then you consider what they are really asking, and give them what they ask for.
For example, today I had to set up an iPhone for a boss. I could have shared all kinds of details with him, but the most useful thing I could do is get it working and keep the lesson to a minimum. He was thinking of other things, so he can focus on that.
I think part of what makes people who know a few things want to share is that it is a good feeling making what you know work. I always feel good when I can make things work. I don’t understand why more people don’t enjoy making things work. To me, fixing things seems one of the highest things you can do in life.
