Touch is really undervalued in its healing and life giving qualities. There are many reasons and evidence for the fact of simple Touch helping fix serious and life threatening issues.
The value of touch in premature babies is well-known. If you watch the video above, one sister helped the other to live. At the moment she was held, her heart rate went down and she started to improve. It was an incredible and wonderful moment for them and for all the other babies who were in similar situations.
I remember clearly every-time in my life I have been touched. It was people who cared for me and touched me with a hug or encouraging word that helped me to heal and grow. I would say that I grew more from knowing I was ok and safe to be loved, than anything that was ever said to me.
We think we are logical and make decisions for practical and obvious reasons, but the truth is we see the world colored by assumptions and bias we aren’t aware we have. As we are loved and listened to, we learn what helps us to be happy and grow. It is remarkable what a simple hug or Innocent Touch can do.
For example, years later I can remember a coworker who touched my arm as part of the way she consoled me about a fear I was sharing. It surprised me then, but I welcomed it. I think sometimes we need more innocent touch than we get normally, and that things like getting a professional massage or hugging your friends can help fill that gap.
In my life more women than men have given me Hugs, but I welcome hugs from men. I don’t know why men don’t give hugs as readily. I think if men gave hugs more readily everyone would benefit. Sharing your heart and feelings takes courage, and if someone doesn’t think that is manly they are crazy.
