What are the most common questions people have about sex education?

The most common question is, “When did you learn about sex and how did you learn it?” I think it’s important to discuss this with children as soon as possible but whatever age that also depends on the individual. But I would say a good age to introduce them to the topic of sex is in middle school. It can be an awkward conversation for parents so that’s why I am going to dedicate an episode to how I would initiate this conversation with a 7th grader.

Why is sex education important for children and teenagers?

Sex education is important because it allows children to understand how the human body works, how babies are made, and how we can protect ourselves. It also gives them the knowledge of what consent is. The most important thing about sex education is that we are talking about it openly and honestly.

What do you see as the biggest challenge for parents when it comes to teaching?

The biggest challenge is the age-old, “I don’t know how to talk to my kids about this” story. I think a lot of people are not sure how to start the conversation so they just shut down and refuse or avoid engaging in talks about reproduction. This can be detrimental because if we have always told our kids that they can talk to us about anything then that’s exactly what they should expect.

When is a good age to start sex education?

A child is at least 9 years old to start giving them sex education lessons however I think they should be aware of their bodies and that sex exists way before that though! For example, our bodies change from age 7 or 8 when we hit puberty. I think it’s up to the parents as to when they want to talk about it with their children but I know for sure that my parents didn’t talk about it much before I was 14 or 15 years old.

How should parents discuss sex education with their children and teens?

Parents should bring it up at the dinner table, have open discussions, and don’t be embarrassed to talk about it. A lot of people think sex is a taboo topic and won’t discuss it openly. If you are too embarrassed to talk about sex then your child will pick up on that and think that sex is also embarrassing.
