Election Voting Machines Will Be Hacked In London
The great Indian Political drama is all set, o begin with nearly three months remaining for the parliamentary elections. With the elections around the Europe chapter of Indian Journalist Association(IJA) has roped in US-based cyber expert to demonstrate how electronic voting machines(EVM) can be hacked.
The so-called US expert is supposed to also be a designer for EVM’s in India, the demonstration will be conducted in London on Monday.
The invitation sent by IJA reads as follows – “His contention is these machines are not only hackable but have routinely been hacked in recent Indian national and state elections so as to rig elections.”
The Election Commission of India is not aware of this demonstration in London. While talking to the press Ashok Lavasa, Election Commissioner said – “We are not aware of any such demonstration, and we have always maintained that the EVMs used by the ECI in India are not tamperable.”
According to the government sources, election dates will be announced in the first week of March. The present BJP lead government will end its term by mid-May.
According to the IJA president, Ashis Ray, there is nothing much to the demonstration in London it is simply an invitation sent to journalists. The media invite sent by IJA also does not disclose the identity of the cybersecurity expert citing security reasons but promised to introduce him to the attendees during the presentation.
The idea behind the demonstration is to show the EVM’s actually used in the Indian elections can be actually manipulated. If the claim is proved it will shatter the serenity over the election process and have international consequences, according to IJA.
India has since 2004 switched over to the EVMs, ever since then it has been challenged by various parties like Congress, API and many others over security issues. Though there has been no evidence of hacking reported officially.
Amidst several demonstrations to oust the EVM system on charges of hacking from opposition parties, the Election Commission of India has now made it mandatory for every EVM to be attached to Voter-Verifiable Paper Audit Trail(VVPAT) machine. This will ensure no tampering is done.
Today the EVM will undergo yet another test, let’s wait and see what is the outcome. Please give us your valuable comments related to the EVM system. Are you a supporter of the EVM or against it.
