Rix Quinn’s Minute Story: House flies

As I think about summer in Texas, House Flies come to mind. Maybe that’s because I’ve been chasing one around the office all morning.

House flyIt’s hard to guess how many there are worldwide, but we know there are 300,000 species. I personally have interacted with several hundred thousand, many of them gathered around my sandwich.

Flies are 65 million years old, which means they’ve been around longer than my aging great uncle. And he may have something in common with them, because two or three hover around him constantly.

Flies produce a sticky substance on their feet that allows them to walk confidently on the ground, or even upside down on our bedroom ceiling. They carry all kinds of horrible diseases, like plague and dysentery.

And even worse, they can only digest liquids. That means before they eat your fresh meal, they spit to liquify it.

Flies can live up to 60 days. And, they can lay up to 2500 eggs each.

So, to sum things up: There are probably a gazillion flies. We cannot escape them. They have amazing reproduction powers, and they will be around longer than the common cold.

To protect yourself, keep the flies outdoors while you stay indoors. And if they get inside, watch where they spit.
