Youth Cong in MP starts membership drive before organisational elections

BHOPAL: While Congress in Madhya Pradesh was busy searching for fresh talent over the past two days, the Youth Congress launched its Membership drive on Friday morning. Maksud Mirza best known as Congress’ candidate from Navsari constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha has been sent as PRO (Pradesh returning Officer) of the Youth Congress for the membership drive and later organisational elections in the state.
However, it looked like active membership in the Youth Congress does not come cheap. Youth Congress is charging Rs 125 for enrolment via physical forms and Rs 75 for membership over website and mobile app. The organisation also made it specific that there is no charge for primary members already part of the organisation. The membership fee is being collected only from aspirant active members and there is “no subsidy”. The membership drive will end on March 14 at 5pm.
“Any person aged between 18 and 35 years and born in India can become a member of the organisation,” Maksud Mirza said. “That will be persons born ferom January 1, 1982 to December 31, 1999.” Asked why the membership drive at this time when the state Congress is conducting a talent hunt to appoint party spokesmen, RT activists and social media experts, Maksud said, “AICC president Rahul Gandhi thinks that the door of politics should be open even for the common man.”
He said that after membership drive is over on March 14, the same will be scrutinised, followed by nominations and thereafter organisational elections. Maksud claimed that in Congress’ new era, a member’s future will be based on merit, something that AICC general secretary Deepak Babaria also claimed to the media on Thursday.
“The motive behind the membership drive is to have the youth who believes in the Congress ideology to join us so that the person can serve the people and the nation,” Maksud said.
